Last week at @ClimateWeekNYC , I had the extraordinary honour of speaking on the Leaders Stage at the Clinton Global Initiative 2026 Annual Meeting.

I didn't travel from Singapore to New York to give another rosy speech about people, planet and purpose.

I went to speak for the builders who are still not being backed.

The entrepreneurs without the rich parent, connected uncle or enormous institutional grant. The women and grassroots innovators who build, test, fail, learn and keep going because the problems outside their doors cannot wait for the next funding cycle.

I know this because Ocean Purpose Project was built exactly this way.

🌊 I started OPP after being personally affected by ocean pollution, asking one simple question:

What happens AFTER we clean the beach?

That question grew into work across plastic circularity, bioremediation and community action.

Since 2020, our communities have recovered 11,400+ kg of plastic, deployed approximately 420 seaweed and mussel bioremediation lines, and developed systems estimated to interact with/filter 14.7 million litres of seawater annually.

My message at CGI was simple:

👉🏽 Back the builders.

Don't wait until everything has been proven.

Fund the prototypes.
Fund the field trials.
Fund the science.
Fund the communities.
Fund the women building solutions because they actually live with the problems they are trying to solve.

And don't treat communities simply as beneficiaries of climate solutions.

Make them co-designers, operators and owners of the new economies we are creating.

My deepest gratitude to President Bill Clinton, Secretary @hillaryclinton, Dr. Chelsea Clinton and the Clinton Global Initiative. Thanks to @HumaAbedin - Chief of Staff, Office of Hillary Rodham Clinton, Victoria Sweet- President, Ishkode Fund, Dr James Mwangi CEO, Equity Group .

It was especially meaningful to speak at the New York Hilton Midtown while OPP's work in Singapore is supported by the Hilton Global Foundation.

Thanks to

Now let's get more builders through the door.

Bangladesh ranks 9th highest ocean plastic waste pollution.

Cox's Bazar is a famous coastal city and tourist hub in southeastern Bangladesh. It is most famous for having the longest natural unbroken sandy sea beach in the world, stretching 120 kilometers along the Bay of Bengal.

Highlights:

Bangladesh still struggles with plastic pollution despite polythene ban

The country contributes 25,000 tonnes of ocean plastic yearly

Weak oversight and poor waste management worsen plastic pollution

Microplastics found in fish, humans, and marine ecosystems

Abandoned fishing nets significantly add to marine microplastic contamination

Stronger regulation, recycling, and awareness needed to prevent crisis.

It was a privilege to attend the inaugural Maritime Cocktails & Conversations Singapore hosted by Maritime SheEO , bringing together women and allies from across the maritime, logistics and shipping industries to build new relationships and create opportunities for future collaboration.

A huge congratulations to Sanjam Sahi Gupta, Founder of Maritime SheEO, and Dr Akanksha Batura Pai, Executive Director of Sinoda Shipping Agency Pte Ltd plus RAKS International Pte Ltd, for creating a platform that empowers more women to lead in one of the world's most important industries.

According to the International Maritime Organization and the BIMCO/ICS Seafarer Workforce Report, women account for only 1.2% of the global seafaring workforce—around 24,000 women worldwide. While that represents a 45.8% increase since 2015, progress remains slow.

As someone working at the intersection of the blue economy, maritime innovation, circular economy and marine conservation, these conversations matter.

Singapore is one of the world's leading maritime nations.

⚓ Around 20% of global shipping tonnage passes through our waters.

🚢 The maritime industry underpins global trade, food security, energy security and economic resilience.

Yet the sector still has significant work to do in achieving gender equality.

This is precisely why initiatives like Maritime SheEO are so important.

Over 90% of our staff in Ocean Purpose Project are women working in:

🌊 Marine biodiversity

🚢 Shipping and ports

⚡ Clean energy

♻️ Circular economy

🤖 Artificial intelligence

📊 Blue Economy

🌱 Coastal resilience

A heartfelt thank you to everyone I had the pleasure of meeting. Congratulations once again to Sanjam and Dr. Akanksha for bringing Maritime SheEO to Singapore and lovely catch ups with Capt. Hari Subramaniam and surprise guest Kishore Mahbubani at the Naumi Hotels - Rang Mahal Restaurants.

Every National Day, our team chooses a theme for the Ocean Purpose Project Beach Hub in Pasir Ris.

This year, there was only one choice.

Singapore's greatest Prime Minister, Mr Lee Kuan Yew.

“I think that the Ministry of the Environment should make it a target in 10 years to let us have fishing in the Singapore River and the Kallang River. It can be done. But if it isn’t done we will go back … if I am still around, I will find out where it went wrong and whoever, whichever group of people made it go wrong and failed to, one, either engineer the system, or re-establish new habits of disposing of sullage water and rubbish.”

— Former Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew, 27 February 1977

That quote perfectly captures what made Mr Lee extraordinary. He demanded excellence all day, every day.

He understood something that remains just as true today:

Clean water wasn't an environmental luxury. It was national security.

As Singapore's "Chief Gardener", he fiercely protected our trees, rivers and reservoirs because he knew that a clean, green Singapore would strengthen public health, attract investment, improve quality of life, and secure our nation's future.

That same philosophy inspires every member of Ocean Purpose Project.

When I learnt that he sat on a tree log having a nasi lemak on the very site where our beach office is built, it blew my mind. Our offices are decorated with his words and photos- cangkul in hand to plant trees with Dr Goh Keng Swee or water pipe in hand to wash the kampung floors. This is the kind of leader I grew up to emulate- hands on, obsessed about excellence, tough, unconcerned about fluff, brilliant, articulate (watch him decimate American journalists with his wit) and devoted to his flag.

Thank you to @oceanpurposeproject staff and vendors and @msesingapore for all the hard work in funding the refurbishments.

Happy National Day Singapore!

It’s wonderful to see Singapore lit up because of the Maju forest issue. I have a bit of a forest crusade of my own. Since 2020, I’ve been walking the Pasir Ris mangroves every week with OPP. Over the years, here are 3 things I’ve come to deeply love about mangroves — and why they matter more than ever:
1️⃣ Mangroves are literally part of the air I breathe
Right here in Pasir Ris, we have about 5–6 hectares of mangrove forest nestled between Sungei Tampines and Sungei Api Api. Based on regional Southeast Asian studies, mangroves produce roughly 22–27 tonnes of oxygen per hectare annually
➡️ That means this small patch might generate approximately 132–162 tonnes of oxygen every year. In a world fixated on carbon- it might be important to focus on oxygen!
Let that sink in.
2️⃣ Pasir Ris sea hibiscus mangrove trees or (Talipariti tiliaceum) do crazy stuff:
🌼 Blooms bright yellow at 9AM → turns orange/red by afternoon → falls by 4PM
🌳 Grows up to 10–15 metres with wide, stabilising root systems
But here’s what makes it powerful:
➡️ It sits in the back-mangrove zone, protecting shorelines before the tide even hits
➡️ Its roots stabilise sand, riverbanks, and coastal edges against erosion
This is not just a tree.
But a great low cost coastal protection infrastructure.
3️⃣ Mangroves and seaweed are part of the same system — and the future of coastal economies
We often talk about ecosystems in isolation.
But the most powerful solutions happen when they work together.
In places like Kenya, community-led projects are already proving this:
🌱 243,000 mangrove seedlings planted across 17 hectares
🌊 80% survival rate in restoration efforts
🌿 91 active seaweed farms producing up to 20 tonnes annually
Why does this matter?
Because:
➡️ Mangroves protect coastlines from flooding and storm surges
➡️ Seaweed farming provides low-cost, zero-freshwater livelihoods
➡️ Together, they restore ecosystems AND create income streams
Happy World Mangrove Day!

The war for Water has begun.
That's why I’m in Bangkok this week attending Thai water Expo 2026 — one of Asia’s leading platforms bringing together 200+ global brands, policymakers, engineers, utilities, and investors shaping the future of water and wastewater systems.

Asia is not just facing a water challenge.
Asia is becoming the epicentre of the global water transition.

💧 Home to 60% of the world’s population
💧 Facing some of the highest levels of water stress and pollution globally
💧 Experiencing both extreme flooding and water scarcity — often simultaneously
💧 Rapid urbanisation placing unprecedented pressure on water infrastructure

At Thai Water Expo, the focus is on scaling solutions:

➡️ Smart water grids and AI-powered monitoring
➡️ Integrated wastewater treatment and reuse
➡️ Decentralised systems for rural and coastal resilience
➡️ Digital platforms enabling real-time water intelligence

At Ocean Purpose Project, our work in seaweed and mussel bioremediation sits exactly at this intersection.

These are not just ocean solutions.
They are freshwater protection systems — deployed at sea.

Here’s how:

🌊 Removing coastal pollution at source
Seaweed absorbs excess nitrogen and phosphorus from agricultural runoff, while mussels filter microalgae, bacteria, and suspended pollutants — acting as natural biofilters.

🌊 Preventing toxic algal blooms
By removing excess nutrients, these systems reduce harmful algal blooms that create “dead zones”, contaminate aquaculture, and disrupt nearby freshwater systems.

🌊 Reducing freshwater demand from agriculture
Traditional agriculture is one of the largest consumers of freshwater globally.
