Simone and Peter have been working together on ORL for over 30 years. Together, they’ve gradually developed, expanded and grown the work they do, always renewing themselves to adapt to what’s ahead in life and work. Never really saying “we’ve made it” or “we’ve done it” keeps them on their toes and stay flexible and adaptable in the way they think and run the business.

ORL is a values-based business, where people come before profit. That starts close to home: with family, with the team, and with the people they work for. People matter most. Look after the people, and the people will look after the work.

Today, our team consists of:
🍃 12 garden care team members working across the gardens we look after regularly
✍️ A team of 6 landscape architects, garden designers, and irrigation specialists, with a broad mix of experience and a strong thread of being hands-on running through all of them
 🌿 Plant specialists and horticulturalists
🪏 A garden building team of 14 who plan and build every garden we create

We most enjoy the projects where we design, build, and then care for a garden long-term, but we also love detailed design-only work anywhere in the country, as well as smaller renovations, stand-alone irrigation, and lighting projects.
Trusted, long-standing team members are involved in every part of the business, from managing the teams to organising the day-to-day work.

These days, Simone and Peter spend more time on the bigger picture of the business, and staying involved in wider industry events and conversations. Peter writes and draws, carrying several creative projects at once alongside his work with the team - including his book Soulscape: Connecting Gardens to Landscape, a journey through ten gardens along the Great Ocean Road and the values behind them. He also enjoys speaking at events and to groups who share his particular passions. Simone and Peter also open their own home garden, Sunnymeade, to visitors, including through Open Gardens Victoria.

Thank you to our wonderful local community, wider online community, team and clients - past, present and future - for being on the journey with us 🌼

Why is landscape design important?

A common question is: “Can’t I just take my ideas and inspiration directly to the landscaper and have them build it?”

The short answer is... yes, you could.

But the long answer is... there is so much more to a garden than a collection of visual ideas and deciding where things go. A landscape builder can build what you describe, but this is often where a vision gets lost in interpretation and in the skills needed to bring an idea to life. A design accurately translates what you’re describing into a clear roadmap and ensures the outcome is the one you imagined.
When you engage a landscape architect or garden designer, they see far more than the visual outcome. They plan for the site, including levels, drainage, soil, wind and sun exposure. They plan for the systems, such as irrigation. And they choose plants and materials suited to your climate and location, with spatial continuity and your lifestyle needs in mind. Bringing together your ideas, needs and inspiration with the realities of the site and the bigger picture, they refine it all into one beautiful, cohesive design, with a consistent language across the hardscape, planting and materials.

Gardens that stand the test of time and mature into beautiful gardens with depth almost always begin with a considered design.

Investing in an initial design and making informed decisions saves money down the track by avoiding costly changes and mistakes during construction. It also allows for staged builds, so each step is planned with the future in mind. The end result is a garden that is carefully considered and belongs, even if it was built in different stages.

Creating beautiful and generous gardens.
Every project we design considers the bees, birds and small creatures that will call it home too.

Some lovely spring colours from the last few months 🌸

Nestled in the heritage precinct of Aireys Inlet, this newly created garden offers a quiet counterpoint to the area’s characteristically wild, undomesticated landscapes.

Built on sand dune sediment rather than clay, the site’s coastal conditions shaped every planting decision - salt-tolerant native and indigenous species were selected to thrive in the sandy ground while echoing the surrounding bushland. These plantings are paired with a more structured, English-garden treatment, creating a considered contrast that suits the recently renovated home’s preserved heritage exterior.

Local materials anchor the design: a seating area built from Aireys sandstone sits beside a rough-sawn native Ironbark pergola. The pergola was built by local builder Daniel of @ecosurebuilding. Deepening ways in which to interact with the space - the garden also includes a veggie patch tucked amongst the garden and a fire pit area.

The result is a serene, restful outdoor space for the homeowner - one that feels distinctly of its place, balancing the rugged coastal landscape with a more tended, intentional garden.

This Point Roadknight garden is positioned on a quiet dead-end street with limited parking.
As a multi-generational beach home, it was important that on-site car parking be readily available. The response to this need was a front garden with informal spaces to park that didn’t look like hardscape when not in use. The Dromana toppings curve and meander through the space, accommodating an expanding number of vehicles during the summer swell, then retract back into a garden during the quieter months. by @oceanroadlandscaping

There is something special about a beach house. The way it embraces you, and gently invites you to slow down through the simple act of arriving.
