Young Adult Book Cover Redesigns 1: The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett 🍃🐦‍⬛

This was the first cover I started my redesign series with. I remember reading this book as a child and vividly remember the cover art; a girl standing by a floral scene, a door resembling a secretive entrance. As I’ve grown up, I’ve realized how common of an approach that image was for the different versions of the cover for this book.
With this redesign, I really wanted to avoid using that same imagery (not because it’s not successful) because I wanted to challenge myself to pull another visual from the story to create an iconic cover with.
I remember reading and thinking how important the robin was to the story. I decided to go with that and create a composition around the robin while still keeping floral elements and pieces of the door (in the background) to keep the cover still recognizable.

The type is also meant to be interacting with the illustration and acting as a whole composition together. The vines coming from the background and wrapping around some of the letters is aiming for that. I also went for a victorian and delicate but still bold looking type; trying to capture the time period and the context of the story while still keeping it whimsical and fun.

so excited about another one of my illustrations making it into the latest issue of @orangepeelmag !!

.

“Femicide in Turkey” is a visual reflection of the intentional killing of girls and women, gender-based violence. It addresses the rise of violence against women in Türkiye and acts as a way of remembering the women lost to this violence.

The traditional clothing is meant to address the history of this as well as the extreme state of femicides in Eastern cultures like Turkish culture.

Thesis Show!! 🐦‍⬛🔩☂️🍎📚🍃

Last May, I had my thesis displayed at the Pratt Shows! My thesis project was about taking a few well-known young adult books and redesigning their covers. Being a designer and illustrator in the publishing industry is a dream for me. This project became a way for me to conjure that dream into an actual project. It gave me a chance to use my design skills in doing what I love the most as a creative; visual storytelling!(in the form of book covers lol)

I worked on the illustrations, the typography, front and back cover layouts, the spine, the end papers and other visual aspects that go into a physical book.

I’ll start posting the artwork and design stuff I did for this project individually soon👀

This project is so dear to my heart. I grew up surrounded by books. My dad (next to my project with my mom on the 6th picture) being a huge reader and an author himself, collecting books became a huge source of comfort and passion for me since I was very young. I was able to go back into some of my favorite books from when I was younger and redesign them, just like how I reimagined them when I was 12.

It was a pleasure to be a Pratt student. The people I met, the classes I took and the inspiring designers I befriended will always be dear to me. I especially want to thank my close friends who went through the experience of “preparing for thesis” together with me and all my professors that helped us with their guidance, patience and mentorship. You guys made it all worth it.

Here’s to what comes next! There is already some exciting things happening but I’m excited to see what post-thesis life has to offer🥳🥳

thrilled about one of my works making it into the latest issue of @orangepeelmag !!

Their latest issue titled “Bloom” consists of works that represent spring and it was very exciting to have my piece “Gentle Breeze” be a part of it🩵

This piece is part of a series that represents the idea of “having been there once” through concepts like nostalgia, melancholy, memory and most importantly, the feeling of rebirth that comes with spring. Come see my thesis during the Pratt Show!! I illustrated and redesigned YA book covers and had so much fun doing so 🫶

I can’t believe I’m basically done with this project. Everything has been so crazy and exciting that I haven’t had time to process it yet. I love this project with my whole heart and truly believe it helped me improve my design skills significantly right before graduation. It feels surreal to be almost finished with school but I think I’ll focus on enjoying the opening for our show tonight, finals, and hanging out with friends one last time as an undergrad 🌝✨
