As Childhood Cancer Awareness Month comes to an end, this is part of our story.

Nothing prepares you for hearing that your child has cancer- for the word neuroblastoma to suddenly become part of your life, or for the fear of handing your baby over for surgery and praying with everything in you that you’ll get him back okay.

While Hamilton was in that first surgery, my sister stopped for gas and found a tiny Jesus sitting at pump #5. In one of the scariest moments of our lives, it felt like the simplest reminder: God was there. My dad later wrote this song about our journey-about the fear, the prayers, the people who carried us, and a God who kept showing up in the places we least expected Him.

Childhood cancer has taken us through some incredibly dark places, but we have never walked them alone. And if our story can leave anything behind for another family walking into their own impossible season, I hope it’s this: when you don’t know how you’ll make it through, keep going. Thank you so much, Candlelighters NYC! 💛 When you saw that Hamilton was wearing his superhero cape to preschool, you went above and beyond and sent capes, swords, and shields for his entire class so that all of his friends could be superheroes alongside him.

Today was so incredibly special. Seeing Hamilton surrounded by his friends, feeling proud, celebrated, and so loved, meant more to us than I can put into words. You took something that made him feel special and gave him the chance to share that joy with his whole class.

Candlelighters NYC has been such a special part of our journey, and we are endlessly grateful for the thoughtful ways they show up for children fighting cancer and their families. 🎗️💛

I walked into Brewster’s school today and saw all of these hearts covering the walls, and I immediately teared up. 💛🎗️

I’m just so incredibly proud of our elementary school for stepping up for Childhood Cancer Awareness Month- and for Hamilton, for the other children in our community who have faced cancer, and for kids everywhere who deserve better treatments and more tomorrows.

Before Hamilton, I knew childhood cancer existed. I cared about it. But I never imagined it would become our child, our family, our life.

About 1 in 285 children will be diagnosed with cancer before age 20. That means every parent walking these elementary school halls needs to know: this isn’t just someone else’s story. Any ordinary day, it could become yours.

You could be the mom sitting in an oncology waiting room. You could be the parent holding your breath waiting for scan results. You could be the one who suddenly knows words and statistics you never wanted to learn.

And you could be the mom who walks into her child’s school one afternoon, sees hundreds of little hearts on the walls supporting childhood cancer, and has to blink back tears because you know exactly what those hearts mean. 💛

Today, they meant that our kids are seen.
They meant that our families aren’t fighting alone.
And they meant that this little community cares.

Tomorrow is September. 🎗️💛

Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.

A month I never imagined would mean anything more to me than a gold ribbon on someone else’s post.

And then it became our child.

This September, I’ll share more of Hamilton’s story, not because cancer defines him, but because his story can help people understand what childhood cancer can actually look like.

Sometimes it looks like a bald head and a hospital bed.

And sometimes it looks like a smiling little boy running into preschool, with a full head of blonde hair, while his mom knows exactly how hard he fought to get there.

Cancer comes in different forms. Treatment looks different for every child. Some endure years of chemotherapy and radiation. Some endure enormous surgeries. Some lose organs. Some live with lifelong effects. Some finish treatment. Some are still being watched closely. And far too many families don’t get to bring their children home.

They all deserve to be seen.

Hamilton is here today because of incredible doctors, research, medicine, and a whole lot of grace. And after everything he has been through, we get the extraordinary privilege of watching him do ordinary things.

So tomorrow, we go gold. 💛

For Hamilton.
For every child still fighting.
For every child being watched and hoping.
For every family forever changed.
And especially for the children who should still be here.
