A huge congratulations to Johnny Gough, who has been awarded a Medal for Excellence for his performance at WorldSkills Shanghai 2026, placing 6th of 36 competitors.

Competing against some of the most talented young electricians from around the world, Johnny has been an outstanding ambassador for the electrical industry and the UK throughout the WorldSkills journey.

Special recognition must also go to NICEIC technical training developer Mitchel Smith, in his role as Training Manager for the Electrical Installation squad, helping Johnny train for Shanghai for the past 18 months.

We're incredibly proud of everything Johnny has achieved. Congratulations on a fantastic result and a well-deserved Medal for Excellence.

Turn years of practical experience into a recognised qualification.

If you've been working as an electrician for several years but don't have a Level 3 qualification, the Experienced Worker Assessment (EWA) with NICEIC could help you gain the formal recognition for the skills and experience you've built.

Get started today and be ready for one of the remaining 2026 EWA Entry Test windows:

🔴 28 September to 16 October
🔴 16 November to 4 December

The EWA Entry Test helps determine whether your existing skills and experience meet the requirements to progress through the EWA pathway. If successful, you'll be able to register for the full EWA and enrol on a relevant Experienced Worker Qualification.

Find out more, complete a skills scan and learn about the EWA pathway through the link in our bio. THE EXPERIENCED WORKER ASSESSMENT

Delivering the UK’s home energy upgrades and clean power targets relies on safe, high-quality work in homes across the country. When government develops new schemes, it is vital that the rules support good businesses and reflect what it takes to get the job done on site.

We recently submitted our response to the UK Government’s consultation on reforming consumer protection for home upgrade schemes.

Drawing on evidence from assessing over 40,000 certified businesses each year, we set out practical priorities to protect consumers while keeping schemes workable for installers:

🔴Use existing systems: Build on established, accredited certification bodies rather than inventing duplicate processes that add extra cost and time.

🔴Back compliant businesses: Ensure a level playing field so contractors who invest in quality and training are supported, not undercut.

🔴Focus on risk: Use real industry data to target checks where problems are most likely, rather than slowing down businesses with a strong compliance record.

🔴Fair accountability: Give installers the first opportunity to resolve issues, and ensure responsibilities are shared fairly across designers, assessors, and contractors.

🔴Collect information once: Improve data sharing across schemes so contractors do not have to submit the same details multiple times.

At NICEIC, our role goes beyond technical standards and certification. We are actively communicating your voice and influencing government and sector bodies, making sure future policies are shaped by your feedback and real trade experience. As the rollout of heat pumps, solar PV, and battery storage grows, we will keep championing the skills and professionalism of our certified contractors.
