A privilege to witness history through art!

Last week in Berlin, I was honoured to be invited to the unveiling of the official portrait of former German Chancellor Angela Merkel by French-German artist Jérémie Queyras at the Bode Museum. Angela Merkel served as Chancellor of Germany from 2005 to 2021 and is widely regarded as one of the most influential political leaders of her generation.

It was an extraordinary occasion, not only for Jérémie, but also for everyone who believes in the enduring power of portraiture to become part of our collective history.

The portrait will remain on public view until 4 October 2026, before joining the Kanzlergalerie at the German Federal Chancellery, where it will be shown along Germany’s permanent collection of portraits of former Chancellors.

Congratulations Jérémie, on this remarkable achievement. Your thoughtful approach to portraiture and your multidisciplinary practice continue to inspire. Having first met you in Paris in 2024 and followed your artistic journey ever since, it has been a genuine privilege to witness this extraordinary milestone. Thank you for allowing me to share such a special moment with you.

It was a pleasure to meet Dr Antje Scherner, Director of the Bode Museum, Professor Dr Marion Ackermann, President of the Stiftung Preußischer Kulturbesitz and H.E. François Delattre, Ambassador of France to Germany, during this intimate event.

OFFMARKET Gallery presented Jérémie's first solo exhibition, Phonescapes, in 2025. Since then, it has been wonderful to see his work receive increasing international recognition, from performances with musicians, to exhibitions across Europe, and now this prestigious commission.

Congratulations once again, Jérémie. It was a privilege to stand beside you for such a historic occasion.

A wonderful afternoon in Canberra celebrating Andrew Sayers as part of the 2026 Canberra Art Biennial.

It was wonderful to see so many people join us for the official opening of "The Capital and Beyond: The Landscapes of Andrew Sayers" at Barton ArtBox.

My sincere thanks to Magda Keaney, Head Curator, International Art at the National Gallery of Australia, for officially opening the exhibition and for her heartfelt and touching words about Andrew, his work and his legacy.

It was also a great honour to welcome H.E. David Martinon, Ambassador of France to Australia, to the exhibition, and to extend a very warm welcome to Australia.

We are enormously grateful to Neil Hobbs, the Canberra Art Biennial team and its wonderful volunteers. This exhibition would not have been possible in Canberra without the Biennial, and it is a privilege to be part of its 2026 program. Diana McPhetres and The ArtBox Barton have also provided such a welcoming home for Andrew’s work.

Above all, my warmest thanks to Andrew Sayers’ family for their trust, generosity and support, and for allowing me the privilege of sharing this more private side of Andrew and his artistic practice.

And most importantly, it was wonderful to see so many friends and art lovers come together to discover another side of Andrew Sayers, not only the art historian, curator and museum leader, but the artist.

CANBERRA — INSTALLED AND ON AIR

The Capital and Beyond: The Landscapes of Andrew Sayers is now installed at Barton ArtBox as part of the 2026 Canberra Art Biennial.

It is very special to see Andrew's works together in Canberra, the city that played such an important part in his life and distinguished career.

And a wonderful way to begin the week — thank you to ArtSound FM 92.7 and Neil Doody for inviting me into the studio to talk about Andrew, his lesser-known artistic practice and bringing his landscapes back to Canberra.

My sincere thanks also to Canberra Art Biennial, Neil Hobbs, Diana McPhetres and Barton ArtBox for making this exhibition possible and for all their support in bringing it together.

We now look forward to the official opening this Saturday, 19 September at 3pm, with Magda Keaney, Head Curator, International Art at the National Gallery of Australia, officially opening the exhibition.

This September, OFFMARKET Gallery heads to Canberra for The Capital and Beyond: The Landscapes of Andrew Sayers.

Andrew Sayers AM (1957–2015) was one of Australia’s most influential art historians and museum leaders: inaugural Director of the National Portrait Gallery, Assistant Director of the National Gallery of Australia and later Director of the National Museum of Australia.

Alongside this distinguished public career, Sayers developed a deeply personal and sustained painting practice.

The Capital and Beyond brings his work back to Canberra, presenting an intimate selection of gouache landscapes from across Australia and offering a rare insight into the artistic voice behind one of the nation’s most influential cultural figures.

So good to catch up with Ortaire de Coupigny in his charming workshop in Port Louis, on the Morbihan coast of Brittany.

Known for his sought-after sardine tin creations, Ortaire transforms authentic French sardine tins into playful, handcrafted sculptural works inspired by the sea and the rich maritime heritage of Brittany.

A new series of works will be arriving in Australia soon.
