Back from searching for stories at @pure_theshow in Marrakech, where I was lucky enough to snatch away an afternoon in the studio of photographer @youssefaitbouskri.photography, located in his family’s @riadkniza (which also multitasks as a quietly beautiful boutique hotel, a private museum of astonishing items collected by his father, and a gallery of his own work). No matter how many times I come to this city I’m always blown away by its creativity and generosity, and Youssef was no exception - very grateful to have got in front of his lens, as well as for a week of meeting other brilliant people all on their own missions! by @offshoots

The heatwave and the housing market had me so hot under the collar this July that I almost missed our summer stunner… but she’s here and floating about for a few more weeks! We’ve got Horatio Clare giving selfie sticks the slip in search of mermaids in Sicily; Rick Jordan island-hopping and goat-dodging in Croatia; and Paul Richardson making the case for the Costa Brava shaking off its package holiday past. I also got to interview two legends of the page and screen in Baz Luhrmann, who proved his raconteur credentials by regaling me with his misadventures on the Trans-Siberian Express, all while hopping in and out of Tokyo taxis; and Maggie O’Farrell, whose latest novel Land should be top of your summer reading list and forms the backdrop for our new Sense of Place author series. “If you don’t get to share knowledge, it’s a real wasted opportunity.” So says 21-year-old Finlay, one of the wise-beyond-his-years guardians of the 120,000 acres of Sutherland wilderness surrounding Hope, the just-opened retreat from @wildland.scot that’s been almost two decades in the making. And that’s exactly what Hope is: a great big generous sharing of knowledge, care, kindness and optimism at the northernmost tip of the country, all wrapped up in gloriously tactile, nature-infused design; soul-restoring and (sometimes literally) bracing immersions in the vast outdoors; and a gentle reminder to protect, nourish and pass on all this brilliance for the generations yet to come. 💚 taken in Loch Hope by @offshoots

A hot spring day calls for a Hot List! The new issue of @condenasttraveller contains our editors’ picks of the year’s grooviest new hotels - a global team effort involving multiple spreadsheets, Zoom discussions and most of @almorey_ ‘s sanity - for which I wrote about gorgeous Swedish @sibbjans, a little farm that’s dreaming big. Also hot for May/Jun: a Euro (art) summer round-up; a crafty Cornish weekender at @cottageorne; dropping in at Emanuel Ungaro’s Provençal retreat; plus adventures in Malta, Calabria, Bergen, Uganda and beyond. 2025! The year that started in the gloop and ended in the sky; in which I grew back my hair and my confidence; put travel firmly back on my dance card; and felt some tough cycles ending with weird symmetry. God knows what 2026 has in store, but I’m sending a little prayer of thanks up to whatever benevolent force had my back this year. Here’s to facing the next one with curiosity, openness and connection at the wheel ✌🏼 by @offshoots

For some Bank Holiday reading, may I suggest… the new issue of @condenasttraveller ?! This one is VERY exciting for me as it features my first Word of Mouth - an artisan special with book binding, neon bending and pattern making! - plus my review of the new Corinthia Bucharest, alongside dreamy features on Corsica, Cairo, Brazil and even Margate. This month’s edition is an ode to the slow and handcrafted, and I can wholeheartedly say that in today’s slop era it is SUCH a pleasure to work on something *real* that so much thought, care, intelligence and experience goes into every time. In winter 2022 I did a beginners’ kayaking course on the Thames (the result of a mild existential crisis; I thought perhaps I might just be a kayaker in waiting and some time spinning around Shadwell Basin would sort me right out). Three years and one quickly lapsed canoeing club membership later, I might not have found myself on the water - but I’m proud to say I made it through this week’s paddle around Sweden’s Sankt Anna archipelago with only moderate bruising, no tick bites (🥳), a working knowledge of Trangia stoves, one small tantrum, and my friendships with @elizabailey @sharples_ and @graniachesterton intact. Here’s to disrupting this soft life every now and then - and really earning that sunset and first sip of g&t… taken in Sankt Anna Skärgård by @offshoots

The particular stretch of East Sussex between Firle and Hastings has become something of a second home to me in recent years, and not just because my parents moved here. It also contains lots of my favourite things: weird seaside glamour, wide-open hillsides, independent creative communities, and Virginia Woolf (obvs).

Therefore it was an absolute DELIGHT to spend the last golden days of September chasing all of the above around with @lizseabrook, who as well as being a brilliant photographer, is also an infinitely calm and patient sat nav controller and emergency car parker.
