Three years in 2:22.

Sep 15 marked exactly 3 years since the day I was diagnosed with cancer. It was also my 222nd medical appointment. It looks much quicker set to the soundtrack of Bridgerton, but it's been long, impossible to show everything, and significantly less glamorous.

Between these clips were 20 rounds of chemo and infusions over 20 months, 26 rounds of radiation, 7 surgeries under general anesthesia, 6 procedures, 168+ needle pokes, a year of monthly injections, endless scans/tests, and 26 different doctors.

It hasn't been linear. There were bouts of tremendous love and more profound loneliness. My mom slept on my couch for months when I could barely care for myself. ❤️ Libby, you may live far, but somehow you were always there too 🥹 @raevenjewelry. During stretches when I couldn't do much more than lie in bed, I started drawing ink botanicals as thank-yous to people who showed up for me. There are still so many I owe. 🙏

When I could, I took my camera outside again into Mother Nature's arms. Then I accidentally dropped my camera, which honestly may have been the worst part of the past three years. 😅 So I picked up a paintbrush and began turning those tears into paintings.

I rang three different bells. But ringing a bell isn't always remission. Today there is no evidence of disease—NED, as they say. I'm still followed closely, and still learning to live alongside uncertainty and chronic bone/joint pain, but slowly my world is getting bigger.

Some dreams I'll now never have. But the dream to be a real artist came back strong, and so did my hair!. I was that little girl drawing pictures with birds on her shoulders. 🙄🦜 Somewhere along the way, I stopped creating so much for myself. Cancer, of all things, brought me back to it. Maybe a journey like this doesn't teach you who you are as much as it makes you remember.

I dream of a studio of my own someday, a place for art and community - creating the days away for as long as I am blessed to be here. Somewhere in all this, of Moss & Memory evolved. A home for my things to live @ofmossandmemory | ofmossandmemory.com

Saturday, I'll be showing a few pieces w/ @campfluff at The Ruom, Seattle 6-9 ♡ by @ofmossandmemory

Iris Unfolding 🪻

My latest painting. She will be up for silent auction tonight at the First Thursday WA Advocacy Gallery & Silent Auction at COR Group Showroom in Pioneer Square.

Tonight's gallery and silent auction is hosted by the Consortium of Interior Design at COR Group Showroom and is part of the Pioneer Square First Thursday Art Walk. Proceeds from the event support Commercial Interior Design Legislation in Washington.

October 1st 5-8 PM COR Group Showroom
505 1st Ave S, Suite 120 Seattle

This piece is a loose, large-scale reimagining of an iris motif from one of my earlier still-life series: Salish Iris. It was inspired by an iris I passed on walks near my home. One stem had a tendency to fall into the pathway. I'd stop to lift and brace it up, a small, recurring act of tending to something in nature that, like all living things, sometimes needed a little support. 💜

24 × 48 in.
Acrylic on 1/2-inch birch panel

Come see the show with live music, refreshments, and live painting, then wander the First Thursday Art Walk with all the incredible art this city has to share! 😍

Bachelor Buttons in Bucharest

This painting was inspired by someone very special to me who spent her early childhood in Romania during the years of communism. Life was difficult and resources were scarce, but among the memories were the fields near her family's home, where bachelor buttons grew. As a child, she would walk through those fields and pick flowers. The sacredness of something ordinary becoming so precious from an otherwise difficult time.

I painted Bachelor Buttons in Bucharest for her, someone I will deeply love for as long as I am here, and for the quiet significance that seemingly simple things can come to hold in our lives, despite the different paths we find ourselves on.

Acrylic on Birch
18” x 24”

Meet mixed media artist Tressa Mae @ofmossandmemory of Camp Fluff 🌃Seattle!

Tressa says “My work is rooted in a nostalgic awareness of time and the traces it leaves behind, or spaces yet to become. I paint flowers as they bloom, bow, soften, and change; fruit marked by aging; and handmade vessels whose irregularities and worn surfaces carry evidence of the maker's hand that came before. During a period of serious illness, my relationship with everything changed. I became acutely aware of time and began noticing life at every stage with such reverence.”

Catch Tressa's work Saturday, September 26 at Camp Fluff Seattle at @theruom at 6PM. See more at ofmossandmemory.com and flufflosangeles.com. #campfluff #seattle taken in Seattle, Washington by @ofmossandmemory
