Smoke in my lungs, sea-salt in my spine.

It’s been a long while since I posted my face here, and there are so many new names here now. I’m Jenna, the hands behind OF SMOKE & SOIL.

Everything you see is still made in small batches, by hand, with intention. Thank you for being here, for supporting my work, and for keeping this little shop breathing. πŸ–€πŸ•―οΈ by @ofsmokeandsoil

There comes a time in October when the house no longer feels entirely occupied by the living.

The corners grow watchful. The old names seem closer. Something familiar lingers just beyond the candlelight, waiting to be remembered.

Not every knock comes from the other side of the door.

Not every guest needs to be seen to be welcomed.

And not everything that returns was ever truly gone.

Allhallowtide was made for the stretch of autumn when remembrance feels closer, the evenings deepen, and the dead are given a little more room at the table.

Black soy wax scented with pumpkin, clove, black coffee, cinnamon, butter, and tonka, then dressed with hand-ground juniper berries, cream baby’s breath, and a small mirror charm.

Burn it for ancestor work, beloved dead, threshold rites, household protection, or simply as a light kept for those who are no longer here.

For the house, the dead, and the dark.

My own Frozen Charlotte, an old family piece believed to have belonged to my maternal great-grandmother, has held a place on my beloved dead altar for some time now. She was actually the inspiration behind including the little figures in this year's Allhallowtide ritual boxes, and I wanted to spend some time discussing why these old dolls have found a place in my own ancestral practice and how they might be used in witchcraft.

A Frozen Charlotte may have begun as a child's plaything, a novelty, or a cheap little figurine. Yet generations later, she can find herself resting among photographs of the dead, beside candles and offerings, carrying a significance that was never intended when she was made.

I find that transformation rather beautiful.

In witchcraft, we often speak of the importance of bones, grave dirt, hair, personal effects, and other physical traces of the dead.

But there is another category of material that deserves our attention.

The things they kept.

The things they touched.

The things they left behind.

In this new Patreon write-up, I'm exploring the history of Frozen Charlottes, their use as ancestral stand-ins, their place among the household dead, and the various ways these small porcelain figures can be incorporated into folk witchcraft without assuming they are haunted or that a spirit must be bound to them.

I've also included a downloadable working, Giving Charlotte Her Place, a simple dedication for establishing a Frozen Charlotte's purpose on an ancestral altar.

Sometimes the most meaningful things on our altars are not the things we made for witchcraft, but the ordinary objects that survived long enough to find their way into our hands.

The Allhallowtide Ritual Box

This year’s box was built around remembrance, vigil, the household threshold, and the beloved dead. Not opening the door to whatever happens to wander, but making the house ready for those already known, remembered, and welcome.

Inside are ten ritual and folk-magic pieces, including House of the Returning Ritual Oil, the Bone Candle, October Smoke incense, The Fixed Door threshold charm, The Housed Dead Frozen Charlotte reliquary, The Hollow Jack, The Listening Glass, Soul Cake Spice, a Witch’s Burr, and The Quiet Company 5Γ—7 print.

The box also includes The House Made Ready, an Allhallowtide rite that brings several of the pieces together to prepare the home, fix the boundary, welcome one of the beloved dead, keep vigil, and close the house again afterward.
There is also an Allhallowtide correspondence sheet and a parchment Soul Cakes recipe for anyone who wants to set aside the dead’s portion before sharing the rest among the living.

Everything was designed around the feeling of late October: old bone, soot, dead leaves, blackened wood, jack-o’-lantern light, quiet rooms, and the sense that the ones before us are never quite as far away as we think.

Allhallowtide Ritual Boxes are available now in the Etsy shop. Quantities are limited. by @ofsmokeandsoil

There is a difference between the ancestors who have long since settled into family history and the dead whose absence still feels fresh.

The ones whose chair you still notice.
Whose recipes still look like theirs.
Whose belongings haven’t quite become heirlooms yet.

This Patreon post is about working with the Near Dead: recently passed ancestors and loved ones who may not yet feel like part of the older ancestral current.

We’re talking about giving them a place without immediately building an elaborate shrine, choosing offerings based on familiarity rather than symbolism, asking for help gently, maintaining boundaries, and knowing when it may be too soon to ask certain things of them.

Patreon members also receive two accompanying downloads:

πŸ•― Altar of the Near Dead Setup Guide
A four-page guide for creating a small, temporary place of remembrance, with offering ideas, boundary wording, gentle ways to ask for help, and guidance for when the Near Dead eventually begin to feel more like part of the older ancestral line. The altar is meant to be a place of remembrance rather than forced communication.

πŸ‚ A Supper Offering for the Near Dead
A simple household rite built around sharing a small portion of the evening meal with the dead. No summoning. No opening gates. Just a plate, a cup, a candle, and a little room made at the table for someone who used to sit among the living.

Hoard & Hollow is now available on its own.

Originally created for the Autumn Equinox box, this one deserved to stay.

Hoard & Hollow is an autumn ritual oil for household steadiness, conservation, protection, and preparation. It’s built around the old instinct to gather before the cold, protect what matters, and keep what you already have from being wasted or scattered.

Made with cinnamon chip, dried apple, walnut leaf, and brown moss in a grapeseed oil base, with a warm apple maple bourbon scent.

Use it for savings and retention work, household charms, pantry and cupboard magic, autumn preparation, threshold work, or anytime you want to strengthen the home as a place of shelter.

This is less about drawing more and more, and more about holding onto what is useful, tending what you’ve built, and preparing well for what comes next.

September is not yet the month of the dead.

That is exactly why I wanted to write about it.

My new Patreon post, The Month the Door Begins to Thin, is about the quieter work that happens before spirit season fully arrives: dusk as a working time, the first cold mornings, tending household boundaries, small offerings at thresholds, and preparing for the darker half of the year without opening every door just because the season is changing.

This is not a post about calling more in.

It is about knowing what belongs inside, what belongs outside, and making the house remember the difference.

I’ve also included three downloadable PDFs with this post:

September Threshold Sealing Rite:
A simple dusk rite for strengthening household boundaries before spirit season.

Threshold Apple & Oat Bake:
A warm seasonal recipe for feeding, grounding, and keeping the home settled.

Dusk Milk:
A spiced evening drink for warmth, protection, and closing the house down for the night.

Not every preparation for the dead needs to involve the dead.

Sometimes it begins with a warm kitchen, a closed door, a key wrapped in thread.

Deadleaf & Dust

For the stretch of autumn when the leaves have gone brittle, the air smells of woodsmoke, and everything begins turning back toward root and soil.
These russet-brown tapers are scented with spiced chestnut, clove, orange peel, nutmeg, oakmoss, and vanilla, then dressed at the base with cinnamon, mulberry leaf, oak leaf, and ritual ash.

Made in pairs for seasonal descent, release, remembrance, ancestor work, or simply keeping a little late-autumn fire on the altar.
