Better in Person, EP 019 @andreo.otiniano Andreo believes you have to be so smart to be so stupid. He says he’s better in person, but he’s chronically online, and we’re all guilty of it. Better in Person, EP 018 @stevieskytel Self love comes first. Stevie Skytel told us you can’t love anybody else if you don’t love yourself, and he says it’s the key. We caught up with him on the Lower East Side to talk about what it means to be offline. For him it’s time with family, time with his significant other, and time with himself. I like myself. I love myself. I think it’s key. Better in person or better online was the easy question. He picked in person right away. Online is a reference, he says, and a text is just a glimpse of a thought. Better in Person, EP 017 @buckle.up.baby Fred picks in person immediately. No debate, not even close. Online he says he goes into what he calls light skin mode. In person you get a real response, real energy. He says his smell goods do the real talking, something a screen can never carry. Then the host tells him he is a reverse catfish, better in person than his own pictures. Fred does not argue. Off camera he goes nomadic sometimes, a hermit other times. Better in Person, EP 015 Alizar Alizar does not use social media. Not lightly, not as a detox, she just does not use it. Asked whether she is better in person or better online, she picks in person immediately. She wants the whole thing. The conversation, the face, the body language, what the vibe actually is. Online strips all of that out and leaves you guessing. Emojis try to do the body language job, but they can only go so far. Then she catches herself. While explaining that men are performative, she realizes she is performing too. The irony is kind of the point. Better in Person, EP 014 @this_is_not_reece_ Reese studies at Colorado State University and is spending time in New York. Back at school, he was writing a paper about social media as a communal space. Then he got to the city and started noticing what the internet quietly takes from us. He stopped texting because you can spend three hours talking to someone through a screen, see them the next day and have nothing left to say. He once FaceTimed a girl for an hour, only for her to say it would be great to meet him when he got to New York. An hour online, and it still did not count as meeting. For Reese, it comes down to convenience versus connection. Ordering groceries might save an hour, but it also removes the small moments. Picking up a tomato and realizing the next one is better. Reaching something off the top shelf for someone who cannot. None of it feels important on its own. Better in Person, EP 010 myspaceriley Super baddie online. In person people tell her she’s actually kind of a dork, and that they like that version better. She says that one’s the real her. It’s just not the one going on her IG. When she’s not online she’s making jewelry. Her brand is @gemmanyc_, Gemma with a G. She’s also an esthetician doing facials, so she’s always busy. Better in Person, EP 009 @emmmakeith She hopes she’s better in person. Her reasoning is that online is all curated, and in the nicest way possible, kind of fake. Tell her she’s better online and she’s taking it as a backhanded compliment. Her real point: you can’t be funny online, and she thinks the best quality somebody can be is funny. Unless you run a meme account, which she doesn’t. Not at this moment. What makes her better in person is body language. Eye contact, how you’re sitting, answering right then without asking a friend what to say. She’s training for the New York City Marathon and volunteers with a running community called Achilles. Favorite thing to do alone is run through a part of New York she doesn’t know yet and explore it. Best way to see the bulk of the city. She reads too. Better in Person, EP 008 Sean He plays chess in Washington Square Park and he does not care about beating strangers online. He needs you across the table. He needs to see the life leave your eyes as he takes all your pieces. His words on playing online: technology ruins everything, chess.com is not chess, this is the most real chess you’ll ever get. What makes him better in person is that he can talk his talk. Sit down across from him and you’re in a psychic battle. No escaping it when he’s staring into the windows of your soul.
