@ogdenmuseum

Speaking of Cups...We have a beautiful selection of SecondLine Pottery in the store.

Kish Hickerson is a New Orleans native and SCAD graduate based in Atlanta, who has found an emotional presence through creating pottery. Her work is rooted in New Orleans culture, where art, music, and rhythm are inseparable from daily life. The movement of second lines winding through the street, the footwork, food, and communal joy all shape her creativity and sense of connection.

Her travels to the American Southwest and Oaxaca, Mexico have inspired a bold, minimalist approach to form, with a focus on strong silhouettes and clean, striking glazes. These journeys have also connected Kish with ceramic artisans, rooting her work in heritage and craftsmanship.

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: Lizz Freeman (@lizzfk)

Lizz Freeman is a community-taught artist who teaches and has a studio practice in New Orleans. Her multi-disciplinary practice began with photography and has evolved to encompass textile arts, printmaking and installation. Her decades-long work with clothing produced an archive of thousands of fabric swatches and a “no waste” philosophy. She draws from this
archive to create her complex and intriguing sewn assemblages.

The Center for Southern Craft & Design exhibits Freeman’s latest series of quilts titled, “Durable
Goods.” Her quilt compositions are improvisational and bold. The fabrics are soft and supple. “Durable Goods” is a nod to the fact that quilts are made to last a lifetime. “New Orleans Sewn Asemblages,” a collection of smaller wall hangings, are also on display. These framed pieces combine colorful textiles through machine and hand sewing, resulting in painting-like
compositions.

Lizz Freeman’s “Durable Goods” is on view and available for purchase at the Center for Southern Craft & Design, located in the Museum Store, now until October 2026.

BOOK SPOTLIGHT: “Cooking from Scratch” by Toya Boudy (@toyaboudy)

Toya Boudy is a New Orleans chef, author and ambassador of Louisiana Cajun and Creole cuisine. Boudy was named one of Louisiana’s Best Chef in 2018 and 2019 by the American Culinary Federation of New Orleans. She was recently featured on the Today Show to promote her third cookbook, “Cooking from Scratch: A Careful Selection of Useful Recipes.”

In her latest cookbook, Boudy draws inspiration from Malinda Russell, an African American cook and pastry chef born in Washington County and raised in Green County, Tennessee. Russell was one of the first known free Black woman to publish her groundbreaking cookbook, “A Domestic Cook Book” in 1866.

“Cooking from Scratch” is a fusion of thoughtful recipes and heartfelt storytelling about starting over and coming home.
