We knew Akili ni Nywele was special but we were not ready for this response 😭✨

The way this exhibition has been received is something else. Packed room, even on a random Tuesday. People coming in, taking their time, having real conversations about the work. It’s been incredible to watch.

If you haven’t seen it yet, you have until next Saturday 3rd October. After that, it’s gone. Don’t sleep on this one.

Creativity Across Borders ✨

“Akili ni Nywele,” an exhibition by Mutua Matheka and Henry Robinson, is a true manifestation of the beauty of creativity across age borders.

We sat down with exhibition muse, Mama Alice from @kiberadaycareforolderpersons , to hear about her experience working with the Akili ni Nywele team, and seeing her portraits on the exhibition wall for the first time.

She passes on a strong message for us as a society: to remember we will all get old one day, and to not forget older people. We can learn from each other across generations, and should include older people in our creative spaces and process.

We look forward to hearing from @truthslinger and @oh_henry on their experience of creating across age and cultural borders at our panel talk on Saturday 19 September 2026.

CREATIVITY ACROSS BORDERS PANELISTS 🇰🇪

Henry Robinson (@oh_henry ) is a Jamaican British visual artist based in East Africa. Robinson’s practice operates at the intersection of fashion and documentary photography. Alongside collaborations with partners such as Puma, Spotify, Google, Porticus and Red Cross, Robinson’s work has been featured in the pages of Plantain and Prazzle magazine.

He has participated in exhibitions in London, Kingston, and Kampala, including his debut solo exhibition at Afropocene Capsule Gallery. Through his lens, he aims to shed light on the multiplicity of the Black experience, foregrounding its beauty and nuance, and inviting viewers to reflect on the stories that shape it.

He is currently exhibiting ‘Akili ni Nywele’ in Nairobi alongside Mutua Muthaka.

What. A. Night. 💫💫

Truly an honour to serve up some creative dishes at the recent gallery opening for photographic geniuses @truthslinger and @oh_henry at @visitngara exploring themes of African hair told through two different lenses - one in black and white, one in bold, bright colour.

What better way to celebrate the art than to emulate the creative nuance in the work itself? Each dish on the menu had two versions - one monochrome, one vivid and saturated - playing with charcoal, hoisin and black sesame against turmeric, herbs, beetroot and pickled cabbage to bring each photographer’s palette to life on the plate.🎨

It was so fun dreaming up this menu up and watching guests spot the parallel before we even explained it. Huge congratulations to two incredibly talented artists - thank you for having Jikoni be part of telling your story.

This Thursday in Ngara - Meet The Elders @kiberadaycareforolderpersons

Who are the people in these images? What are their stories? The subjects at the heart of AKILI NI NYWELE step out from behind the frame.

The session creates space for the participants to speak about their lives, experiences and their involvement in the project. It also gives audiences an opportunity to meet the people behind the photographs and to understand that the lives represented in the exhibition extend far beyond the images on the walls.

This event is a collaboration between @truthslinger and visual artist @oh_henry as part of the UK/Kenya Seaon Legacy.

Akili Ni Nywele
A showcase by @truthslinger x @oh_henry that explores the idea of the future as an ongoing conversation.

Juxtaposing the present and future in frames is also such a brilliant idea in that by freezing a moment in time, we also get to examine the past as a reflection of our present. Making the art a portal between timelines.

Indeed the work of the artist is to imagine a new reality and then finding a way to express this new reality to those around them.

Amazing community effort went into this and it’s amazing to see the creatives doing dope shit but also showing up for each other.
