Retail Simps

What if the Velvet Underground had written ‘Wooly Bully’ and Sam The Sham ‘Sister Ray?’ If Ron House picked up some bongos and joined CCR or If Half Japanese and Hasil Adkins started a Meters cover band? This is the scrap yard of the Retail Simp’s mind. Short on practice and high on ideas, thee Retail Simple Tones are 4 well traveled and unraveled individuals, bound by a musical adventure. This is the southern soul of Memphian tradesmen flipped on it’s snowy head, the sound of impure regionalism. An alternate kind of Northern Soul with a frosty Arctic sheen. More spazzed out guitar, more howling lunacy, more heat of the moment, turnt poetry and outside the box-isms. 3 LPs, 2 7”s, 1 2xLP, many tapes and shows in, the band remains unpredictable and ill content with stasis and the status quo. As the returns for REAL rock n roll diminish exponentially, so do the Retail Simps expectations, however, like the pious Eunuchs of Sumeria, their mission and core spirit remains strongly in tact: Get it or don’t, they’re on a mission.

NOW AVAILABLE- One Day, Everyone Will Have Always Been Against This Volume II: A Benefit For the Palestine Children’s Relief Fund.

This compilation features tracks from 36 artists, all in the name of supporting children suffering from lack of food, shelter, and medical care.

My eternal thanks to everyone who contributed music. The response I got from all of the artists, even those who were currently unable to submit a song, was more generous and kind than I could have imagined. In dark times like these, that’s worth a lot.

Ross’ deep fried Coney Island Baby dropped yesterday.

I can’t say how great this @hamerplace record is. It’s the kind of writing that still blows my mind in its restraint, perfectly hilarious and heartbreaking. Like Lou on a liver and peas intake.
Out on bespoke handmade CDs with all proceeds going to the Alzheimers Society of Ireland.

Hi folks, we’re very excited be playing Jan 10th at @curveball.dublin!

We’ll be debuting some numbers off our forthcoming agri-diesel rock opera, A Power Of Wides, which we’re gonna record the week after the show. The show will also be a fundraiser to keep us in tins while we record so dig in please 🙏

Oh Boland is the scum-pop song writing of Niall Murphy.

Oh Boland came up through the rural bar scene of the Irish west coast threading effervescent power pop through a mess of blown out guitars and flying nun jangle.

The latest LP, Western Leisure (out now on Madrid’s Meritorio Records) draws from a recent past in the rural Galway town of Tuam and the present in Dublin city, a montage of oblique images and characters. Western Leisure traces a landscape of balding florists under ceiling fans (Grass Walls), a guilt-wracked panel beater soothsaying future accidents in his steelwork (Order Of Malta), and the parasitic jukebox-conman who drowns in his children’s paddling pool (A Power Of Wides).

Somewhere between sad, hysterical, and nonsensical, these characters cross paths with more tactile memories of depression and loss. The half-cocked ballads of the west of Ireland run alongside observations of place in Dublin amid a housing crisis, and the exploitation of people’s right to have place in their lives by the parasitic landlord class (Western Leisure Pt.2).

The songs were written in 2021 in the vacuum of successive lockdowns, leaning heavily into spontaneity and the possibilities of overdubbed home recording over writing for a band. The material marks a significant development in the band’s sound with the typical garage punk confection tempered by Kevin Ayers and the Whole World weirdness (Cult Of A Western Rail
Corridor), free jazz skronk (Western Leisure Pt 2), faux Steely Dan mockery (A Parting Thing) and loping Bakersfield Country (Western Leisure).

Still, Murphy hasn’t lost any joy for straight ahead rock n roll with Grass Walls, Order Of Malta and Power Of Wides keeping things centred on The Clean, meets Protex, meets Replacements concoction that’s been his main squeeze from the start.
