The collision of delight and trauma caused by the Australian Women’s Weekly Duck Cake.
šŸ¦† šŸŽ‚
Judging by the number of you who slid into my DMs after I shared my ā€œjourneyā€ with this cake, it would seem that there are many of us out there delightaumatised by this bad boy.

The things we do for our kids.
Give me the train cake over the duck cake any day.

{I actually used a @tigga_mac hack video for this cake because have you seen the actual engineering insanity required by the original recipe? BAHAHAHAHAH.}

Please allow me 6-8 business weeks to recover from this malarkey. by @ohcreativeday

Libraries change lives.

We are all made of stories.

And if you haven’t read ā€˜This is Happiness’ by Niall Williams, go read it. You’ll never want to leave Faha. taken in The State Library of New South Wales by @ohcreativeday

Hello Real Humans of Instagram!

My name is Shannon and this week on one of my drives to school, I listened to a high-brow literary podcast.
The next day I drove in listening to 2Pac at full volume.

And that's fairly indicative of what you'll find here.
It's a serve of books and process arts and crafts for kids.
It's a side-serve of adult books I've enjoyed.
It's tongue-in-cheek parenting.
It's a bit of my teaching life.
It's A LOT of random thoughts.

It's perfectly imperfect.
It's all over the shop.
I LOVE ALL THE NICHES.

Thank you to @andrea.nelson.art for sharing my book and introducing me to so many more rad humans (oh yeah! I wrote a book and it's out now blah blah)

So- who are you?

Forever yours in books, art and pumpkin pies,

If this were Ancient Rome - stick with me and this factually inaccurate analogy, PUH-LEASE - then Cristin from @artsplorers_au would be my Patron.

Nobody champions the Arts and creators like Cristin.

We first started following each other back in the Insta Olden Days (when the feed was chronological!)

That first photo dates back to one of my READ + CREATE classes and remains one of my favourite photos- Cristin’s daughters hard at work creating. Those little ladies are now tall humans!

Cristin has brought her daughters along to a fair few of my events and workshops- always cheering me on and supporting me in my random creative adventures.

We catch up at as many bookish events as we can and I always appreciate her astute PoVs on basically everything. We (self-)declared ourselves to be the Presidents of the @trentdaltonauthor Fan Club. If Cristin gives a book a glowing review, I know I will love it. When I don’t know what to do with my kids in Sydney in the school holidays, I slide straight into Cristin’s DMs because she always KNOWS.

Every time we catch up, we throw our hands in the air, lament and declare that this is our FINAL YEAR on Instagram. Come what may, I’m so grateful that this silly little app brought me into Cristin’s orbit.

Anyhoo, why should you care about this Galentine’s story?
Because I think it illustrates how important it is to champion and cheerlead others.

Be like Cristin. by @ohcreativeday

If you don’t hear from me, it’s because the cockatoos have got me.

I got home from school this arvo and many of my neighbours were in their front yards just eyeing off the crackle of cockatoos sitting on all the power lines. (How GOOD a collective noun is that?!)

They were divebombing people and literally holding up traffic.

For a few weeks a year, a particular kind of tree fruits on our street and cockatoos descend from WHO KNOWS WHERE and take over our street. The air is filled with their squawking and they leave fruit littered down the street. And then they all suddenly disappear. Until next year.

Some might say they terrorise us but I kinda love it. It’s their world and we’re just living in it.

Let me know if you give this simple craft a go. You just need some wooden spoons! by @ohcreativeday

Today was the first day of Term 4 at my school. During the first week of each term, I like to tell students about the books I read in the school holidays.

Why?
A) Because talking about books is how I like to spend 86% of my life;
B) because before the holidays, I always tell students to read lots of good books in the holidays. Why should they do it if I’m not doing it?
C) it normalises conversations about our reading identities;
D) it leads to conversations about the books students enjoyed in the holidays.

I spent a large portion of today raving about this book, and I now have a waitlist of readers eager to borrow it as soon as it is a part of our library collection.

I love @saraharmstrongwriter’s books for three main reasons.
1) Her pacing is epic. I described it as a ā€œsuspenseful page-turnerā€ to all of Year 4 today.
2) She has a knack for developing young, complex characters with deep inner worlds. In this story, Max must fight for survival after a tsunami hits. As he navigates this situation, he is also deeply reflective about his family, his feelings and his home.
3) Sarah explores family dynamics so deftly.

If you have an upper primary + reader who loves adventure, suspense, with a touch of apocalyptic vibes, I’d grab them a copy of ā€˜The Wave.’ by @ohcreativeday

Birds- yay or nay?
My husband and I joke that when I retire I’m going to buy one of those vests with many pockets, some expensive binoculars, and then travel to far-flung places to watch birds.

Until then, I channel my obsession into birdy kids’ art and craft projects and the @guardianaustralia Bird of the Year competition.

Haven’t heard of it? It’s like the ultimate election campaign X Hunger Games X The Voice. A list of Australian birds is released and people vote to save their faves from elimination.

Screams were scrummed at my place when the Gouldian Finch was eliminated. Cries of anguish were heard when the Magpie was booted. I swore some swears when the Cassowary went. I feel like the Rainbow Lorikeet deserves its moment in the spotlight. Does anybody really love a Bin Chicken?

The final round of voting has closed and tomorrow we discover who is crowned Australia’s favourite bird. Will anybody beat the Tawny Frogmouth?
All of my votes went to the Willy Wagtail.
My son is all about Team Kookaburra. Other family members are partial to the Gang Gang and the Baudin’s Black Cockatoo.
Will the Curlew stage an upset?

Did you vote? Who for? by @ohcreativeday

Why yes, we did make the last-minute decision to take a long weekend trip to Canberra. And why yes, of course, I told my family that an excursion to the @nationallibraryaus was mandatory.

ā€œYou’re so cringe, Mum. Act more nonch.ā€
ā€œNonch?ā€
ā€œNonchalant.ā€

WATCH ME CHALANT ALL OVER THIS TOWN, BABES.

(Welcome to my holiday slide night.)

Visiting the Nation’s Capital, for me, reinforced how stories are at the heart of all human existence. Canberra is a place rich in storytelling - I loved the way the stories of our nation are told in so many forms and formats.

We practised some weaving after seeing the Arthur Boyd: Tapestries exhibit at the @nationalgalleryaus. What a truly epic story involving an Australian artist, an Italian saint and a Portuguese tapestry manufacturer.

Our hearts need the arts.

I am rubbish at taking nice photos on holidays. And then I am filled with post-holiday regret that I didn’t take any nice photos. So I steal them off my husband’s phone, and let’s see how closely he pays attention to my Insta habits, and if he turns up cranky in my comments that I stole his photos, and passed them off as my own.

(Yes, of course we went to @floriade_australia.)

Floriade makes for the BEST people-watching. Something about all that glorious nature makes people act CRAY, and ridiculously delightful, and/or delightfully ridiculous.

Can report that the flowers were also excellent, and the bees approved. (I DID take this video. I didn’t scrape it from my husband’s phone.)

Yes I’m turning into my mother and take photos of signs whilst I’m on holidays. BUT LOOK - There was a flower bed designed to look like fairy bread!
Excellent.
No notes.

I mortgaged my home to buy this overpriced kite that all overwhelmed and overwrought parents buy at Floriade. The amount of joy that it brought my son was honestly delightful.
I regret nothing.

Is there anything more joyful than a kid flying a kite?

His name is Barney (the kite, not the kid.)
Welcome to the family, Barney.

We did the family orienteering challenge at the @nationalarboretumcanberra.

ā€œWhat’s an arboretum, mum?ā€
ā€œIt’s like a museum for trees.ā€
(Humans can be rad.)

(Barney came too.)

As a child growing up in Australia, if I left my shoes outside, I remember being told to always give them a shake before putting them back on. This was to make sure that no Redback Spiders had crawled into your shoes! Turns out this was a bit of a tall story as Redbacks rarely leave their webs.

Inject some Aussie wildlife into your Halloween with these Redback Spiders. They’re project number 16 in my #52WeeksofOhCreativeAnimals, sharing some of the weird and wonderful wildlife that call Australia home. Not everything in Australia will kill you. Promise.

Comment REDBACK and I’ll send you the link to this template and project instructions. by @ohcreativeday
