NATIONAL SECURITY OFFICER APPRECIATION WEEK

The third week in September is National Security Officer Appreciation Week. This National Week recognizes the in-house and contract security personnel you see patrolling stores, schools, concerts, banks, and other business. Being a main pillar in The American Legion, The Department of Ohio wishes to recognize our security officers. Wish to recognize someone specifically you know? Leave a comment below.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there are 1,194,000 security officers in the United States. Records of security guards in action go back to the middle ages in Europe. Watchmen were employed to look after valuables as well as to observe and report on any incoming attacks. Later in America, they became known as night-watchmen. Eventually, the title evolved to a more general and inclusive title such as security guard, private patrol officer, or security officer.

When you see a security officer on the job, stop and thank them for their work.

Thirteen folds.
2.3 pounds.
The weight of a folded flag, measurable in ounces.
But to those left behind, it’s heavier than the world.

Today, on Memorial Day, we gather not simply for a long weekend or the beginning of summer, but for a sacred purpose: to honor the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our country.

Memorial Day reminds us that freedom is never free. Behind every flag waving proudly in the breeze is the sacrifice of someone who answered the call of duty with courage, honor, and selflessness. These heroes came from different backgrounds, different towns, and different generations, but they shared one common belief — that something greater than themselves was worth protecting.

Today we remember the soldiers who never returned home to their families. We remember the empty seats at dinner tables, the folded flags handed to grieving loved ones, and the countless dreams left unfinished. Their sacrifice allows us to live in peace, speak freely, and pursue our hopes without fear.

But remembrance is more than words. It is our responsibility to live in a way that honors their legacy — by showing kindness, serving our communities, protecting liberty, and caring for one another as fellow Americans.

As we enjoy this day with family and friends, let us also pause for reflection and gratitude. Let us teach future generations the meaning of sacrifice and the importance of unity. And let us never forget those who paid the ultimate price for our nation.

To all Gold Star families and to all who have lost loved ones in military service, we thank you. Your sacrifice will never be forgotten.

May we carry the memory of our fallen heroes not only today, but every day. by @ohio_legion
