Experiential learning in action!

Recently, our second- and third-year students in the Bachelor of Science in Design's Experiential Media Design (XMD) program had the opportunity to visit the Prototype Museum for a behind-the-scenes look at the creative and technical work that brings immersive experiences to life.

Students toured the museum and met with industry professionals David Kozan, Exhibit Designer at Roto Studios, and Andrew Decker, Lead Creative Developer, who shared insights into exhibit design, creative development, and the collaborative process behind engaging interactive experiences.

Experiences like these help connect classroom learning with professional practice while giving students a firsthand look at careers in experiential media, exhibition design, and creative technology.

A special thank you to David and Andrew for sharing their expertise and helping inspire the next generation of designers.

“There's space for what you bring.”

In Episode 40, Rae Watters joins us to talk about game mechanics of "Role Call" to consider how interactive experiences shape the way we understand other people, how designers balance intention with play, and why our individual perspectives matter. Role Call is a game Rae is working on that will be released in Spring 2027. It's a conversation about games, consent, identity, and the potential for design to help us recognize the value of difference.

2026 BGDA lecture with Kim Helmbold

Tue, October 20, 2026

5:00 pm - 6:30 pm

Mendenhall Lab 100

The Department of Design is pleased to host the annual Butter Goeller Design Affair lecture, this year’s featured guest is internationally recognized French designer Kim Helmbold.

Join us at Ohio State for a public lecture exploring inclusive design and social innovation. Kim Helmbold will share his insights with students, faculty, and the broader community, offering an opportunity to engage with innovative work and ideas.

The lecture is free and open to all. We hope you’ll join us!

About Kim Helmbold

Kim Helmbold is a design and innovation leader with international experience across Europe, the United States, and Asia. Trained as an industrial designer at ENSCI–Les Ateliers in Paris, he has held senior leadership positions at Philips and Groupe SEB, building and leading global design teams and multidisciplinary innovation capabilities across sectors ranging from personal care and consumer goods to healthcare and mobility.

Throughout his career, he has brought design, anthropology, consumer insights, and foresight together to better understand how people live, anticipate change, and translate insights into meaningful innovation. He is particularly interested in how design can move beyond products and markets to challenge established perspectives, address overlooked needs, and create value for both people and business. Inclusive design and social innovation are among the areas he continues to explore, driven by a curiosity about people and the diversity of their lives.

About the Butter Goeller Design Affair

The Department’s endowed fund, The Annual Reinhart Butter and Heike Goeller Design Affair Fund, supports distinguished experts to come to Ohio State where they engage in a multi-day series of activities including hands-on workshops for Ohio State DESIGN students and public lectures for the larger Columbus design community.

Established by Professors Emeriti Reinhart Butter and Heike Goeller the fund aims to advance both the theory and practice of design through participatory and thought-provoking events. by @ohiostatedesign

Last week, Columbus-based designer and illustrator @slagle.jeremy of @slagledesign visited our Visual Communication Design studios for a guest presentation and demonstration on his brand identity design process.

Jeremy walked students through how he approaches a branding project from early concepts and sketching to developing a visual identity, sharing examples from his professional practice as well as the Adobe tools that support his process. His work spans brand identity, packaging, illustration, and design for a wide range of local and national clients.

Students also got a preview of some of the techniques Jeremy will be sharing at Adobe MAX 2026 in Miami this year where he will lead a hands-on workshop on his packaging design workflow. by @ohiostatedesign

Design Semester Exchange Programs Information Session - Spring 2028

Fri, October 9, 2026
12:00 pm - 1:00 pm
210 Hayes Hall, Student Lounge

Thinking about studying abroad as a Design student? Join us for an information session to learn about Ohio State Design's semester exchange opportunities and hear firsthand from students who have participated in the program.

The Department of Design's semester exchange programs provide students with the opportunity to study at leading international institutions, immerse themselves in new cultures, and gain valuable global perspectives that strengthen their design practice. Students return with enhanced cross-cultural communication skills, expanded professional networks, and experiences that enrich both their academic work and future careers.

During this session, faculty and staff will provide an overview of the application process, program options, eligibility requirements, and academic planning considerations. Attendees will also hear from students who completed exchanges in Montréal, Canada, and Singapore during Spring 2026, as well as students preparing to participate in Spring 2027 programs. These peer perspectives will offer insight into everything from the application process and academics to travel, housing, and life abroad.

This session is particularly recommended for second-year students who may be eligible to participate in Spring 2028 semester exchange, but design foundations students are also encouraged to attend to begin planning early.

Whether you're actively considering a semester abroad or simply curious about the opportunities available, this session is a great way to explore how global education can become part of your Ohio State Design experience. by @ohiostatedesign

“It’s very important that you understand the lived conditions of the people, of the community, in which you are trying to work with.”

In Episode 39, Shadrick Addy Kuteh joins us to talk about design for social impact, drawing from his work with communities in West Africa and his research into cultural preservation and policy. We talk about using virtual reality as a tool for advocacy, the importance of lived experience and cultural context, and why community partners need to have a say in the design process. We also explore ethics, personal values, and how social design can be about recognizing opportunities to improve people's lives and environments, not just solving problems.
