PLEASE READ CAPTION

Tomorrow will be 11 months since I had to say bye to my biggest fan, a best friend, my father. The last time I saw him full of life was May 4th, 2025 at my last half marathon race. At every race he’d attend, he’d meet me at the finish line with a big smile and a hug. The same was true at every sporting event he ever attended during our childhood. He was his kids’ biggest fan.

I was set to run my first marathon on June 1st, 2025. He would tell everyone I was running it for him, as it was 5 days before his birthday. Little did I know I would be burying my dad two days before then. I couldn’t make the race.

Determined to not let the year end without running my first full marathon, I found the perfect location I know my dad would have loved and picked the Hoover Damn marathon in Nevada. I remember my dad taking us up there as kids - and so my siblings and I made the trip to my first marathon race and recreated our childhood photo after I finished my run.

I have found a lot of comfort in long distance running. Maybe the pain distracts from a deeper one coming from this loss, a pain I’ll feel the rest of my life. Or just maybe, it brings me closer to him, because I know he would have loved to attend every race he could to cheer me on. When I do trail runs, I look around and think of him. I think of how he knew so many random nature facts, how he could name every plant and tree, and his excitement over any animal encounter.

I’m learning that grief is the love we have left after we lose someone so important to us. A whole chunk of my heart went with my dad the day he died. Running is where I get to channel the love we shared.
I’m going to keep running, for as long as I miss and love him.
