Daria Zvereva on Radical Decisions, Creative Direction, and Designing a Future Beyond Borders

Daria Zvereva is a creative strategist and cultural connector at AMO—the think tank of OMA—where she works closely with Samir Bantal on brand collaborations, exhibitions, and international research projects.

Her story begins in Crimea, moves through Moscow, and arrives in Rotterdam—via trains, buses, and radical choices. From dancer to refugee to architect, Daria shares how music, fear, and deep curiosity shaped her journey into creative leadership.

In this episode, we talk about escaping war, building a new life without documents, and learning to support yourself before anyone else does. Daria reflects on the importance of being a dot-connector, why architecture must evolve beyond buildings, and how she’s helping others turn potential into action.

We explore identity, authenticity, and what it means to create space—not just for ideas, but for people who rarely get a seat at the table.

Her first podcast interview. And what convo. Thank you, Daria, for reminding us that creative work is never just about output. It’s about survival, belief, and building futures worth living in.

Qatar Pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai.
‘From the Coastline, We Progress’ Visual Diaries

Have you ever imagined a creative direction for the representation of a country?
We did it.
In Osaka.
At the World Expo, held only once every five years.

From the Coastline, We Progress reflects Qatar’s history and the way it has been shaped to make promises for the years ahead.

At the end of the day, it’s all about curiosity, wonder, and purpose — from the hands who created everything, tangible and intangible, to the hands, eyes, ears, and minds of those who came to discover Qatar as they had never imagined before.

“We weren’t supposed to come up with something this clean..Like something happened!”

Stone Island. Paris Visual Diary

This flagship store in the heart of Paris is the culmination of years of work by a dedicated team. Every OMA architect who has ever contributed to a Stone Island project—whether through early sketches, concept research, or recent designs—has, directly or indirectly, left their mark on this space. What began as an idea in Chicago has grown into a milestone for all of us, marking a significant chapter in the collaboration between OMA and Stone Island since 2021.

For me personally, this project was about more than designing an interior—it was about creating a product that reflects the brand’s identity and authenticity. As an architect, you fight for the design; as a curator, you fight for the relationships that connect every element. You fight for the people and the potential you see in them. I still can’t believe the day Mo, Markus, Phil, and Johan answered my email with this wild idea to create something together. From that moment on, my vision of the profession changed forever.

I believe in Stone Island as a platform for emerging artists, and I’m deeply grateful to see my dream become reality—every person I ever dreamed of working with came together to build this.

Thank you, @samirbantal , for your unwavering support and for the endless opportunities and challenges you’ve entrusted me with. It’s an honor to walk this path alongside you, giving everything I can—and more.

Leave me on an uninhabited island and I’ll still find the best bookshop, a small gallery, or a church to climb.

Here’s everything I loved visiting, plus a list of missed opportunities I’ll chase next time.

Marseille - Athens - Hydra

When I met @azadellibre the owner named it a nomadic bookshop - today she can be in Marseille and tomorrow elsewhere. I have never even seen some of the books she owns - like this one: collection Martin Margiela autumn winter 1998-1999 by Mark Borthwick.

@latraverse_marseille is fantastic.

All the furniture is done from on-the-streets finding and it’s a separate exhibition at @latraverse_marseille

I came across this letter Frank Ocean wrote to himself in 2011 in response to a Tumblr prompt: “Explain your current situation to your five-years-ago self.”

It stayed with me for months. Recently, I reread a chat with a friend from exactly a year ago, during PFW. That Dasha had no idea what was coming. The past year turned everything upside down—even more than the five before it.

I thought I’d give it a shot too. taken in Paris, France by @ohmadash

How crazy do you have to be to leave everything you’ve built over four years and move to another country for four months to pursue your dream?

Is it even crazier to leave behind the relationships you built there, only to realize that your dreams had changed — but you couldn’t know it until you tried?

“If it don’t scare you, you ain’t dreamin‘ big enough.”

Everything is worth it together with sub locals.
Just don’t say sorry if you chose to dream big enough.

Forever grateful for you: Niklas, Ilaria, Roula, Sophia.

Forever sub locals:

Hello world, it’s Daria, and I have the most exciting news: I officially received a 4-year residency in France, and I’m moving to Paris this June.

First of all, I want to thank everyone who supported me with recommendation letters, kind words, or simply took the time to listen to my story and help me through this process.

It’s not the first time (and definitely not the last) that I’m asking for help with accommodation — I’m looking for a studio or apartment in Paris starting from June / beginning of July. Sublets and temporary options are very welcome. Tips and tricks appreciated as well.

What makes this story truly different is that France gave me permission to become part of its society based on who I am as a person — my documents are not tied to a work visa or employment. I want to explore this freedom further and open myself to wider collaborations.

Over the past years, I’ve worked not only as an architect, but also as a curator, manager, and someone who connects the right dots and pushes cross-cultural collaborations further.

If you are interested in working together, don’t hesitate to request the password for my website (for commercial purposes only), and I’ll be happy to connect.

Paris — it’s time to turn dreams into reality, and I feel more ready than ever 😮‍💨 taken in Paris, France by @ohmadash
