We’re honored to share that The Oshakan Project is part of Countryside: A Place to Live, Not to Leave under the direction of @oma.eu and Samir Bantal at the @nmoqatar 🌍

Grateful to the @l.f.a_am team for reaching out and including us in this ambitious curation, which explores Armenia as one city vs. 1001 settlements, and situates it within a dense global research on countrysides across the world.

The @aavisiting_school in Armenia, launched in 2024, and contributed a small but meaningful video within a much larger conversation on how we live, stay, and build beyond the city.

Exhibition opened on October 29 and is up till April 29, 2026!

A look back at the opening of (Un)Sculpted at Spazio Viruly.

The group exhibition brings together twelve designers and artists, each approaching the sculptural from a different angle — exploring form and making in an age of hybrid craftsmanship, where tactility, technique and process continuously overlap.

Thank you to everyone who joined us, to all participating designers for their trust and commitment, and special thanks to @fahimmzareh for assisting during the opening evening.

With thanks to @lowlander and @fritzkola_nl for generously providing the drinks.

All pictures by @floorbesuijen

(Un)Sculpted remains on view by appointment until 25 January.

Get in touch for the catalogue of the exhibition.

This autumn, J.Kim became part of Countryside: A Place to Live, Not to Leave – an exhibition hosted by Qatar Museums at the National Museum of Qatar, one of the region’s leading cultural institutions, where past and future, tradition and research exist side by side. Curated by Rem Koolhaas and Samir Bantal, with Yotam Ben Hur (AMO/OMA), the project explored land, movement and rural life across Africa, the Middle East and Central Asia. Within this global reflection, we introduced Bale Jacket.

Bale Jacket is an installation that bridges Korean and Uzbek cultural memory through a sculptural garment shaped like a bundle – a form deeply tied to migration. Inspired by the personal and collective histories of the Koryo-saram community, the work reflects on displacement as a catalyst for transformation and new belonging.

The jacket is constructed from vintage fabrics collected across Uzbekistan over several years, sewn into a voluminous silhouette reminiscent of travel, care, and continuity. Each textile fragment carries traces of lived experience, forming a tactile archive of movement and adaptation. The installation is accompanied by archival footage from the artist’s family, showing relatives preparing bundles for her aunt’s dowry – a gesture of both departure and preservation.

Placed upon a traditional Uzbek tugun and Koryo-Saram kundimi, the Bale Jacket forms a dialogue between two cultures that met in exile yet found kinship through generosity and hospitality. The work honors the capacity of people to create home wherever they arrive, celebrating resilience, warmth, and the beauty born from cultural intersection.

The installation was curated by Daria Zvereva and Alexandra Kharitonova.

В конце октября в Дохе открылась выставка ‘Countryside: A Place to Live, Not to Leave’, которую курировали AMO/OMA!

The Armenian Room, “Present Components of Future Villages,” emerged through a layered process of research, experimentation, and exchange of ideas, and was brought to life in Doha under the careful curation of Daria Zvereva @ohmadash. From early explorations to the final installation, the team’s work shaped a coherent narrative of Armenian rural life and its future potential.

We photographed “Countryside: A Place to Live, Not to Leave”, the new exhibition by AMO/OMA @oma.eu in Doha, Qatar - first presented in 2020 at the Guggenheim Museum in New York, where rural areas around the world were explored to reveal the profound changes and crises unfolding beyond the cities.

The second edition, presented in Qatar, focuses on “The Arc”, a geographical stretch extending from South Africa to eastern China, passing through East Africa, the Middle East, and Central Asia. This arc connects largely traditional rural territories undergoing processes of modernization, representing not just a chain of crises but a potential for transformation and sustainability.

The Qatar Preparatory School (QPS) is the main venue of the exhibition. The classrooms serve as spaces for research, dialogue, and production; true “exhibitions within the exhibition” and the school functions as an active educational environment where ideas about desert life, cultivation, and sustainability take shape. At the National Museum of Qatar, a complementary installation showcases the exhibition’s key themes and highlights the ongoing research being carried out at QPS.

Outside, the school grounds have been transformed into a laboratory for desert agriculture, where new irrigation and cultivation techniques, such as hydroponics, high-tech greenhouses, vertical towers, and shade tunnels are tested to make arid soils fertile and imagine a cleaner, more efficient agricultural future.

The project explores new forms of rural life that merge tradition and technology, proposing the countryside as a sustainable and vital alternative to the city.

Countryside: A Place to Live, Not to Leave examines rural regions worldwide. With a particular focus on ‘the Arc’ a contiguous band that runs through Africa, the Middle East, and Central Asia, the exhibition demonstrates what it means to live in the countryside today across a landlocked corridor historically linked by the Silk Road and largely free of major cities. The exhibition builds on it’s initial chapter in 2020, which was presented as Countryside, The Future at the Guggenheim museum in New York City.

As cities become more and more congested and expensive, maybe a pivotal moment has come: can we conceive of reversing the universal movement to the city that has systematically robbed the countryside of its inhabitants? Can we develop “new” ways to inhabit the countryside, and consider the city as not the only model for pursuing a rich life?

Countryside is now open at the iconic Qatar Preparatory School in Doha, and at the National Museum of Qatar. Showcasing research done in collaboration with over 200 institutions and individual experts in Qatar and worldwide.

Thankful for the teams at Qatar Museums, QPS, and NMoQ. To our long standing printing and miracle making partners at PPS Imaging. All made possible with the support of QFFD, Volkswagen Group, Hassad Food and many others.

Thank you Samir and Rem for welcoming me back to the countryside. I couldn’t be more proud of our team at AMO/OMA.
