Adiba @quotidian_pleasures @artofadiba, Marina Solnzewa @solnzewa.marina, and Altyn Kapalova @altyn_kapalova prepared kurut and shorpo for all of us, and Adiba shared what memories and archives this dish preserves. Caterina Pîslari @katischsch described how to practice decolonial design. Vitalie Sprînceană @vtlspr, Julietta (Dzhulyetta) Grigoryan @zhduliet, and
Alisher Khassengaliyev @alialihandro_cher discussed and illustrated the catastrophic consequences of the extractivist colonial policies of the Soviet Union and Russia.

the SOVIET COLONIAL MYTH of “FRIENDSHIP of PEOPLES”

Our new text on imperial ideology under the cover of an “emancipatory” smoke screen published on @syg.ma.editorial

Sometimes narratives of domination and alienation sound friendly. Under the guise of important concepts familiar to many—such as friendship or solidarity—authoritarian political regimes build structures of subjugation and propaganda. This is exactly what happened with the Soviet concept of “Friendship of Peoples.” A very personal feeling familiar to everyone was overlaid with monuments and loyalty parades, sharply polarizing society and distinguishing between “us” and “them.” This space of politically constructed “Friendship” very clearly defined the conditions under which so-called “Friendship” was to take place.

Soviet narratives cannot be viewed in a vacuum — merely as historical phenomena of their time. The ideology, concepts and wordings that emerged and were popularised at various stages of the Soviet period travel across time and live on in the present as transformed concepts. In the current election campaign in Russia (2026), the United Russia party—Vladimir Putin’s backyard—is using the “Friendship of Peoples” concept for its advertising. It is therefore important to consider ‘Friendship of Peoples’ not only as a Soviet internationalist, romanticised phenomenon in its own form, but also in terms of how these ideas are received within contemporary Russian ideology, political and public discourse or among the neo-imperial thinkers, who sometimes are described as Neo-Eurasianist.

The stories in this collection reflect the environmental consequences of projects that the Soviet Union and, across a broader timespan, “Russia” carried out across Eurasia.

There is a growing positive attitude toward the USSR in Euro-American and South American left-wing media, and we want to warn against it: while our positionality is anti-capitalist, our decolonial and anti-authoritarian lenses compel us to resist treating Soviet state top-down, centralizing policies as inherently liberating.

This collection includes testimonies of secret nuclear testing, water contamination, mining, draining of lakes for cotton production, and destruction of Indigenous peoples’ ways of living, languages, cultures, and world-making practices, all carried out by the Soviet Union in an attempt to prove its superiority over capitalism.

As it turns out, for Indigenous peoples, both Soviet socialism and capitalism were “modernizing” and “civilizing” mission-in-action—interested neither in understanding, nor in co-existing, but in subjugation and oppression.

The authors turn to their environments to reveal Soviet indifference to the reciprocal relations between humans and nature, as Soviet discourses had been predominantly focused on overcoming nature’s constraints, material culture, class and social relations.

Water, trees, and soil occupy various positions across these texts. Sometimes they witness, sometimes they die, sometimes they emerge as agents of colonial cruelty.
