АЛ ЕНДІ ӨЗІМІЗ ШАЙ ІШЕЙІК / AL ENDI ÖZIMIZ SHAI ISHEIK

“Beyond right and wrong, there is a field. I will meet you there.” (Rumi)

After Solidarity is an immersive playspace for adults where imagination is a political act. Artist and choreographer Grace Euna Kim presents this new participatory performance in cooperation with de_colonialanguage. Audience are invited to explore the co-creation of a post-ideological future, leading into a collective discussion and sharing of reflections.
As anti-migrant tensions are ever more on the rise across Germany and Europe, the encounter is grounded in questions of how conflict-based ideologies are inscribed within bodies and the possibilities to transform them.

How can we imagine a world beyond violence, when we are embedded in the systems that reproduce it?
How can we approach solidarity without producing other forms of exclusion?
How can we enact resistance without producing other forms of oppression?

After Solidarity thus offers a space to explore ways of reclaiming lost futures and reworlding our relation to the “other”. We question how to manifest a peaceful co-existence—a post-violence radical future—amidst plural lived realities of injustice, fear, disagreement, and vulnerability.

BLUES IN BLACK AND WHITE
A Collection of Essays, Poetry, and Conversations
by May Ayim, translated and by Anne V. Adams

Next Nearby Reading Room session will take place on
October 3 at 12PM (CET) online.
The discussion will be held in English.

Send us an email on de.colonialanguage@gmail.com if you would like to join us.

Blues in Black and White is May Ayim’s first collection of poetry. It was published in 1995 by Orlanda Frauenverlag. The book contains eight cycles of poems and is illustrated with Adinkra symbols from Ghana (in German book). The book has been translated into English and French. The English-language edition also includes essays and interviews by and with May Ayim. In the 2020s, the texts were adapted for the stage.

May Ayim (3 May 1960 – 9 August 1996) is the pen name of May Opitz (born Brigitte Sylvia Andler); she was an Afro-German poet, educator, and activist. The child of a German dancer and Ghanaian medical student, she lived with a white German foster family when young. After reconnecting with her father and his family in Ghana, in 1992 she took his surname for a pen name.

Opitz wrote a thesis at the University of Regensburg, “Afro-Deutsche: Ihre Kultur- und Sozialgeschichte auf dem Hintergrund gesellschaftlicher Veränderungen” (Afro-Germans: Their Cultural and Social History on the Background of Social Change), which was the first scholarly study of Afro-German history. It included accounts by many women of Afro-German descent. Ayim worked as an activist to unite Afro-Germans and combat racism in German society. She co-founded Initiative Schwarze Menschen in Deutschland [de] (Initiative of Black People in Germany) to that purpose in the late 1980s.

the SOVIET COLONIAL MYTH of “FRIENDSHIP of PEOPLES”

Our new text on imperial ideology under the cover of an “emancipatory” smoke screen published on @syg.ma.editorial

Sometimes narratives of domination and alienation sound friendly. Under the guise of important concepts familiar to many—such as friendship or solidarity—authoritarian political regimes build structures of subjugation and propaganda. This is exactly what happened with the Soviet concept of “Friendship of Peoples.” A very personal feeling familiar to everyone was overlaid with monuments and loyalty parades, sharply polarizing society and distinguishing between “us” and “them.” This space of politically constructed “Friendship” very clearly defined the conditions under which so-called “Friendship” was to take place.

Soviet narratives cannot be viewed in a vacuum — merely as historical phenomena of their time. The ideology, concepts and wordings that emerged and were popularised at various stages of the Soviet period travel across time and live on in the present as transformed concepts. In the current election campaign in Russia (2026), the United Russia party—Vladimir Putin’s backyard—is using the “Friendship of Peoples” concept for its advertising. It is therefore important to consider ‘Friendship of Peoples’ not only as a Soviet internationalist, romanticised phenomenon in its own form, but also in terms of how these ideas are received within contemporary Russian ideology, political and public discourse or among the neo-imperial thinkers, who sometimes are described as Neo-Eurasianist.

OPEN VEINS OF LATIN AMERICA
Eduardo Galeano

Next Nearby Reading Room session will take place on
September 5th at 10AM (CET) online.
The discussion will be held in English.

Send us an email on de.colonialanguage@gmail.com if you would like to join us.

This discussion will revolve around Galeano’s Open Veins of Latin America: Five Centuries of a Pillage of a Continent (1971). This is a counter-narrative: it is a counter-epistemology and counter-history, retold by a bleeding continent subjected to the Western imperial violence since the 15th century. In 1961, Frantz Fanon encouraged us to learn from the countries of South America to achieve decolonization of Africa:
“Latin America, made up of new independent countries which sit at the United Nations and raise the wind there, ought to be an object lesson for Africa. These former colonies since their liberation have suffered the brazenfaced rule of Western capitalism in terror and destitution. [...] We know today that this fascism at high interest which has triumphed for half a century in Latin America is the dialectic result of states which were semi-colonial during the period of independence.”
Looted, robbed, exploited, deformed, enslaved, militarised, and internally exiled, bleeding Latin America is not a document of the past. Its bleeding veins are the history of the present.

Eduardo Galeano (1940–2015), a Uruguayan writer, essayist and journalist, was one of the most distinctive voices of Latin America. He is particularly known for blending lyrical writing with political discourse, outspokenly condemning dictatorships, imperialistic exploitations and injustices in Latin America. For his political views, he was forced to flee, first to Argentina, and then Spain.

The reading format remains the same: always nearby and online. The frame is open:
~ each reads the text independently, partial readings are possible
~ each brings to the meeting an association (nearbyness) with the text we have read. It can be anything: poetry, image, video, manifesto, toy, object, your body, anmeldung ... anything
~ we are discussing collectively our nearbyness-associations.
