Thanks to Hurricane Polo, we have had a couple days of storms and cooler temps. This had brought the lovely critters out. 2 Western Diamondbacks and - Desert Tortoise, in addition to the nightly coyote visit, had been lovely! A fellow hiker and I safely removed some cactus spines from the tortoise, with some tiny tweezers. On our last day we finally needed our puffies! It got so cold overnight, breakfast bars were popsicles. Good thing I only brought shorts😂. We left Obsidian and started our journey back to our pickup spot, about 13 miles away. Ever excited by a side quest, we took a short detour up to a glacier, which was melted, but soon enough will be covered in a blanket of snow. We quickly exchanged trees for rocks and boulders, as the rest of our journey was through a lava field. We marveled at what it must have been like at the time of the eruption. Miles upon miles of lava. Another year of exploration with my Tramily. Day 3 of Sisters Wilderness, took us from Camp Lake to The Obsidian Area, separate from the PCT. After our side hustle up to the bonus lakes, we packed up and headed up the copper portion of the mountain behind the lake, which happened to be the trail out. It was definitely the sketchiest of this trip, with super steep, very loose footing. The kind where we were exaggerating leaning forward, so we wouldn’t tumble backwards. We’ve done exceedingly sketchier trails on other trips, but this got our attention. Stunningly beautiful day after we made it up. Today was our last full day on trail, since we only had time for a shortie this time. The sadness always creeps in, but we press on. We were looking forward to camping in Obsidian Area, where the PCT’ers can’t camp. Not because we don’t love PCT’ers, but we were hopeful for another quiet night of solitude. We climbed up, and up, and found our spot. No cell service and lots of beautiful Obsidian glass to look at. The ground absolutely shining like glass. Day 3 started with us HAVING to show @corinneggrace the hidden lakes we found the night before. It was so fun to see them in daylight, even more blue. It was a great start to our day. Day 3 is almost always the most scenic somehow. Maybe because you’re miles into the trail by then and you’re really in the wilderness? We got to Camp Lake early enough to take our time filtering and soaking. During dinner, we were talking about two additional lakes that were up and over a near by mountain. With just enough daylight, I decided to try and find them. Just as I was about to give up the search and head back to camp, Sullivan showed up and wanted to find them too! Off we went in another direction and soon enough, there they were! Gorgeous! Day 2: Sisters Wilderness, Green Lakes to Camp Lake. On almost every trip, there is at least a 1/2 day of “trail tax”. This is your burn zone, downed tree, what have you, for miles. First part of day 2 was that. Areas like that remind you to appreciate the absolute beauty of fireweed and the irony of water crossings in burn zones. The friend/mentor that awakened the trail junkies in us would say to “be grateful for every step”. He wasn’t wrong. This will stay with me forever. We landed at a pristine site at Camp Lake and had our first night without cell service (hooray) and perfect sleeping. #takeahike #threesisterswilderness #backpacking #oregon #burnzone by @okie2az

Today marks a month since I got back from the annual Tramily adventure (except last year, which we missed, but won’t let happen again). Life has been hectic and I haven’t posted anything, which means I won’t have the memory each year on my FB feed, and we can’t have that! My FB memories have been flooded with various backpacking trips through the years, for a month. So, without further ado, I give you Three Sisters Wilderness. My Tramily picked me up at the airport and we drove straight to the trailhead, where I opened my luggage on the grass and hurriedly packed up my backpack and hoped I didn’t forget anything. We started on a Monday, to hopefully avoid it being people-y and we were successful! Green Lakes TH to the last lake in that section, where we hunkered down for the night. It was perfectly quiet and lovely. We had water almost the whole way and a lovely creek to filter from near camp.
