I read True Biz back in Spring, and I have recommended it to 4 or 5 people since. Naomi Novik’s debut novel about teenagers at a struggling deaf school has received lots of acclaim for good reason!

What I liked about it:
🙌 The interspersed nonfiction throughout teaching deaf history, culture, and language
🙌 The punctuation and formatting to distinguish when dialogue was signed or spoken
🙌 The way common tropes of teen books were naturally featured here, demonstrating commonality between deaf culture and hearing culture
🙌 The policy and societal infrastructure issues that were informative within a fictional storyline

Have you read this one?

Book Review ✨ One Last Stop by Casey McQuinston ✨ What a sweet read. This sapphic romance was more than meets the eye.
📖
Summary: August is new to New York City when she meets Jane on the subway. Everyday that August rides Jane rides too. It seems like they are destined to keep having meet-cutes, which begs the question… Why is Jane there every time? August discovers that Jane doesn’t remember who she is, but one thing is clear, Jane has been stuck on this subway for a while and Jane needs help. Using her amateur detective skills, August discovers Jane’s past and works with her to bring back her memories. A romance blossoms and the stakes of saving Jane from her entrapment become so much higher.
📖
My thoughts: The chemistry between Jane and August was palpable. The cast of supporting characters, a ragtag gang of Brooklyn queers, was charming. The storyline created depth and high stakes, making this romance novel feel layered and complex. One Last Stop was distinctly unique, and I’m definitely a fan of author Casey McQuinston.
📖
Go read this one. 4.75 out of 5 stars!

Book Review ✨ Swamplandia by Karen Russell ✨ A 2013 Pulitzer Prize finalist and an especially bizarre Southern Gothic — Swamplandia isn’t trying to be accepted by the masses. In fact, I’m reticent to recommend it, though I loved it, because I’m not sure I have a great understanding of what I loved about it. I’m going to attempt to explain so here goes…

Summary 🐊 A family at the fringes of society runs an alligator inspired theme park in the swamps of Southern Florida (think a more bonkers Gator-land IYKYK or a “Tiger King”-esque park for alligators). When the matriarch passes, the family falls apart. Each member goes on their own independent journey confronting their grief and inability to function in the “real world” where society has no longer deemed their form of entertainment valuable. Under educated and naive, the children attempt to find their way with dangerous results. (Trigger warning: sexual assault of a minor).

Why I Liked it 💕 The book’s dark and macabre sense of place sucked me in. The primary protagonist is a rambunctious girl who I could not help but love and root for. It’s incredibly well written and vivid. It ventures between reality and the supernatural. Most importantly, I tore through it. I entered the world. I felt it.

So, I loved it, but you may not, or you might. It’s a risk, and it could pay off, or you could question my reviews in the future 😂 That’s up to you. by @okletsbookit

It’s POWDERED SUGAR, not the other thing 😂 Oops, my creativity was a little off 🤦🏻‍♀️ Today, I’m reviewing The Golden Spoon by Jessa Maxwell. Thank you to @atriabooks for the book and to fellow bookstagrammer @momandmadread for running this giveaway. Finally, thanks to @lynnthelibrarian who recommended this to me for my 12 books recommended by bookstagram challenge.

The Golden Spoon was a fun, quick, cozy mystery. It was a bit predictable and clichéd but still the structure felt comforting — like throwing a police procedural on, IYKYK. While it wasn’t a top read for me this year, it was definitely enjoyable for a couple afternoons of fun. If you like any two of the five below, this book will be fun for you:
👩🏼‍🍳 The Great British Bake-off
🔪 Agatha Christie style novels
🏖️ Light thrillers on summer vacation
🏰 Fancy chateaus, manors, etc.

I give this one 3.5 out of 5 ⭐️. Have you read this one? What do you think? by @okletsbookit

Book Review ✨ Seven Days in June by Tia Williams ✨ Thank you to @bri_newt_reads for recommending this book and giving it to me for the 12 books in 12 months challenge.

Summary: Two successful writers have a secret past. As troubled teens they shared something brief and deeply meaningful. When they re-enter each others lives 20 years later, they are pulled into a whirlwind again. Will romance endure this time?

My Thoughts: Can every romance book be written like this? Electric chemistry, incredible tension, spicy & well-executed sex scenes… WHILE also featuring complex characters with deep backstories and character development outside the central romantic storyline. The book deals with childhood trauma, abuse, addiction, hidden disabilities, and the struggles of parenting while carrying past trauma. The darker subjects are balanced with a really captivating love story, and the love story, while important, is just one factor of the characters’ journeys toward healing. It’s a 5 star rating from me! ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️

Does anyone have any similar recommendations for me? Well written romances with strong character development, great depth, and plot points outside of the main couple? (Sorry if this makes me sound snobby — I am just so excited to find a romance that I LOVED!)

Bookstore Tourism time!📍 Landmark Booksellers in Franklin, Tennessee

I stopped into this cute little store when I was visiting family in TN a couple weeks ago. Landmark Booksellers is located on Main Street in Franklin, Tennessee. The building, circa 1808, was the Old Factory Store, and was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972. The bookstore, inspired Karen Kingsbury to write The Bridge, which was later adapted into a Hallmark movie. Landmark Booksellers, established in 2005, features great sections highlighting Tennessee authors and Southern literature, beautifully curated Classics, a comprehensive collection of CS Lewis, and gorgeous Easton Press copies.

After exploring for an hour, I purchased Swamplandia! by Karen Russell and a very cool copy of The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson.

Check out this store when you visit Franklin, TN!
