Yesterday, at noon, explosions had already been rending the sky over Kyiv for an hour—a sadly familiar occurrence since Russia launched a campaign of terror against the Ukrainian capital’s civilian infrastructure a few weeks ago.

A new front has emerged: that of a constant aerial battle between jet-powered drones and ballistic missiles on one side, and fighter jets, heavy machine guns firing tracer rounds, anti-ballistic systems, and small interceptor drones protecting a city of several million inhabitants on the other. Beneath these clashes, the residents of the Ukrainian capital go about their lives—the infernal routine of a country where the entire population is bound to the war effort and its morbid daily reality.

What took place at night before the summer is now a daylight reality. Where we used to assess the damage at first light, we can now experience it right beside us. To the senses that previously dominated—hearing and smell—sight has now been added: we see the smoke, we see the flames, we see the buildings collapse, we see the wounded and the dead.

Yesterday, shortly before 1:00 p.m., a Geran-5 drone exploded on a building belonging to the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. One woman was killed, and dozens of others were injured. The images of people standing at the windows of the burning building shocked the entire country.

my first roll of film from Donbas, some of these places have been completely erased

I post these as I believe the memory of these places must stay alive. Today it is nearly impossible to get so close to the zero line due to the constant FPV looming overhead.

Christmas on the frontline

I spent last Christmas on the frontline in Ukraine living with these Ukrainian soldiers who showed us around their area of work. Our location was approx 6-7km from russian positions and fpv drones were flying at all times. Despite the unbearable cold, the defenders keep on fighting. These photos are some of our brief moments at home, mainly in between trips around the area.

Kyiv metro during air raids

as there were air raids non-stop over the course of 7-8 days and nights, the metro stations were over crowded, trains were working on and off, sometimes you would spend around an hour or two stuck in between stations.

the metro became a kind of underground waiting room

Pokrovsk

If i am ever put up against a wall and have to define what hell is, I would definitely point to those days during the fall of Pokrovsk. A devilish nightmare with angelic souls, trying to get the few surviving elderly out of this madness. A besieged city in the 21st century. During these evacuations, people lost their limbs, silence was rare, the rumming of the then new optic fiber fpvs were haunting us, and the constant artillery pounding and obliterating everything around. Some started digging graves in front of their apartment blocks, as to have a place to put the bodies of their neighbours .
If God ever created hell it must be the russian army coming to your town.

Pokrovsk, one of the hundreds of towns that went through this, and that keep going through this.

These are some of my images from during that time spent in Pokrovsk.
