Weekend reading: ‘Wylding Hall,’ Elizabeth Hand (2015) — After the death of one of their members in a mysterious fall, the manager/producer of a ‘70s folk rock band arranges for the group to spend the summer at Wylding Hall, an ancient, remote house in the English countryside. During the group’s stay, their lead singer disappears somewhere within the Hall, never to be heard from again.

Forty years later, a documentary filmmaker gathers together the surviving band members, along with some associates, to recall the events of that fateful summer. An effective evocation of the period.

Weekend reading and viewing: ‘The Uninvited’, Dorothy Macardle (1942) — A #spookyseason rereading of my very favorite haunted house novel. The film adaptation is excellent as well.

Weekend reading: ‘The Baron’s Coffin and Other Disquieting Tales’, Ada Buisson (circa 1860s, this edition 2022) — #spookingreading from one of my favorite genres, Victorian ghost stories, these by a young woman writer (1839-1866). This small volume collects all of her short fiction, which was originally published in a well-known magazine of the period, “Belgravia.”
