John Lennon - Out The Blue

Time to reveal this year’s record sleeve design for Secret 7” at 180 Studios.

Inspired by the lyrics of John Lennon’s Out The Blue — “out the blue you came to me and blew away life’s misery” — imagining love as a sudden, almost supernatural force that weaves through a heavy heart.

The ex voto heart represents gratitude for that force. Traditionally, ex votos are religious offerings given in thanks for an answered prayer or miracle.

The sleeve itself was hand constructed at London Centre for Book Arts using traditional bookbinding materials and techniques.

HOXTON VINYL INTERVIEW

@HoxtonVinyl kindly donated an unpressed vinyl record for the Disposable Music exhibition, which asks: what makes a song or a record? Is it still real or complete if it hasn’t been recorded or pressed?

In the spirit of this piece, we spoke with them about what pressing records means to them, how vinyl preserves artistry, and how the physical format defines music.

PARASITE

10” black vinyl record, metal sculpture

The music industry today feels like it’s been overtaken by something foreign. Systems, algorithms, and trends attach themselves like an alien growth, feeding off the very thing they depend on. The music becomes a host — drained of energy, immobilised, its strength siphoned away. What once thrived with its own vitality is left struggling under the weight of something that doesn’t nurture, only consumes.

Read the Deep Dive on the website.
