As I'm ramping up production of the ornaments, the time and headache that this little funnel saves me is compounding. It's such a small thing, but such a bit improvement to the overall process of casting them.

This is probably the aspect of making the ornaments that I get asked about most often, but there's no solution that will be perfect for every situation.

If you can get alumina rods though, they are well worth it. I use 6mm diameter and 100mm length, although obviously those dimensions are very specific to the ornament. A bigger/smaller ornament will need a different set of measurements.

And I found the factory through Alibaba. Most of them have a minimum order that's unrealistic for a personal order, but some will allow you to place a smaller order.

I haven't done much with idea since I tried it earlier in the year, but I have a few new plans for it. I also want to see if you could do the same with handbuilding templates, as I think you could mark out a shape and add a design at the same time, but I'm not sure how well it would release from the clay afterwards.

There are 5 glaze options as standard, but also the choice to not decide and to get a random glaze instead. Most of these will be one of the standard options, but I will also include more experimental glazes too.

The files for this one aren't available on Makerworld, for obvious reasons, but maybe I'll share them in spring, and cause myself another headache this time next year 😂

They're made in @valentineclays Bistro Porcelain slip, and weigh about 50g when glazed. And they're fired upside down on alumina rods set into soft kiln bricks. I have a video series on YouTube that does into the whole process for the original ornaments, but it's basically the same for these.

I'm a sucker for efficiency, especially with glaze tests. One of the biggest advantages to making your own glazes is that you don't need to commit much to trying a new glaze (unlike premade glazes, where you might have to buy a whole container), but it can still be quite wasteful if you're mixing up a bunch of tests.

This approach lets you mix up the corners (and even then you only need a small batch) and waste basically nothing for the 12 new combinations.

You can get the tiny syringes on eBay/Amazon (this one is 10ml) and you can get the print files for the mould on Makerworld.
