Here’s a little more info about the five most basic glaze ingredients, for people who want to get started mixing or making their own glazes. If you want to know more, look at Joe Thompson’s First Five (US) or Freedom Five (everywhere else), you can find them here: @oldforgecreations

If you want to learn more from me directly, I’ll be teaching an intro to glaze chemistry at @roundrockcommunityclay and another at. @tumbleweed.clay (both in July).

I had put this off long enough. When my pots weren’t quite ready to trim, I was left with an unexpected free evening, which was the perfect time to dive in.

I’m going to scrap this test tile, because I realized the next day I hadn’t doubled the whiting. I added that into the glaze, and am letting these sit for a few days before dipping and testing.

I bought all of my ingredients from The Ceramic Shop. Here are the ingredients for this glaze:

Single Batch (I did a double in the video)
Glaze Recipe from @oldforgecreations via Glazy.org

Silica: 32.50 g
Frit 3134: 25g
Nepheline Syenite: 20g
Kaolin: 12.5g
Whiting: 10g

Colors:
Titanium Dioxide: 2.5g
Bentonite: 2g
Cobalt Carbonate: 1g

Water: 100g

I made a double batch because I was worried I wouldn’t have enough to dip my pieces, not realizing just how much 100g of material increases the volume of glaze.

I have NO idea if I did this correctly, so if you make glazes and have tips or input, please share them, I’m always incredibly appreciative of the help.

I’ll post the results in a few weeks!
