how to capture a lingering taste of a fleeting performance?

two pots constantly cooking and churning, almost identical spices, seasoned to taste by audiences. this captured memory is not limited to how particularly what each stage tasted like, or how strangely nice each unnamed spice blended together blindly. rather, it will be a recall of the feeling of sharing something unknown, all at once, altogether, with the passing of time and fermentation 🍄‍🟫

💐 standing ovation for ~the~ balcony of many conversations and events of ours 🍻

project 1: housing as a body
ba-bau AIR @ba.bau.air
time and place: circa 2019-2023-, 82A Tho Nhuom, Hanoi 100000

an attempt to archive and recreate the (es)sense of ba-bau AIR in an olfactory form.

In search for our long term research & practice of space and care, all of 5 editions capture the essence and landscape of the physical house, whether (or not) linger traces and footprints of care-work, space-users intervention, interaction among human and non-human factors.

🫖 dining room (1,2,3): quilted lilies, incense, leftover citrus peels, damp spring walls

🔭 after balcony: neighbors’ thiết mộc lan & osmanthus, rusty balcony, energy drinks, ashtrays, filtered cigarettes

🩻 soft air: dusty surface, storage room, white flower petals for altar’s offerings

*all creations for this project contains professional grade material for fine fragrances and natural extraction of existing materials from cooking events, daily objects, and the surrounding of ba-bau AIR physical house at 82A Tho Nhuom, Hanoi.

The project is presented firstly at Southest Asian Art Forum, Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, Singapore (3-4 August, 2023), “On the non-physicality of space”. by @olfactory_archives

ba-bau is a kitchen of experiment / gathering, craddle of dreams (though some has shattered). a collective space of interdisciplinary, always on the verge of dismiss.

p1: open studio, pot luck halloween 2019/20
p2: indonesian midnight nongkrong, friendship forever 2023
