Does the guest experience end at the door?

We spend considerable time thinking about how hotel interiors smell. The lobby, the guest room, the spa.

But some of the most memorable moments happen outside.

A drink on the terrace before dinner. An afternoon beside the pool. The last few people sitting around a table long after everyone else has gone inside.

Outdoor fragrance requires a different approach. There’s moving air, changing temperatures and the existing smells of gardens, food and the surrounding landscape.

Our Outdoor Candle Collection was developed for these spaces, with fragrances designed to complement what’s already there.

Travel Notes / Adelaide / Part 1

I’ve always enjoyed arriving somewhere with a plan, then finding myself doing something entirely different.

Adelaide was a little like that. Long lunches, good wine, conversations with locals and a few unexpected discoveries.

There’s a real appreciation for craftsmanship here, from JamFactory to R.M.Williams.

I tend to travel with my nose as much as my eyes. The smell of an old building or a restaurant preparing for dinner often stays with me longer than what I actually saw.

Does the guest experience stop at the bathroom door?

We spend considerable time thinking about how hotel bedrooms and public spaces feel. But some of the most memorable moments happen in private.

A hot shower after a long flight. A bath before dinner. A few quiet minutes before the day begins.

OD.1 / SPA is our approach to fragrance in these spaces, where warm water, steam, skincare and the surrounding materials all play a part.

There was already a scent in the room. The fireplace.

When we began working with @beechmontestate one of the challenges was the in-room fireplaces.

They’re part of what makes being there feel so good, particularly on a cold Scenic Rim morning, but they also leave smoke hanging in the air.

We didn’t want to cover that with something fresh or make the room even woodier.

I kept thinking about wool.

Something soft, warm and comforting. The olfactory equivalent of the blanket you pull over yourself with the fire still going.

We eventually landed on saffron, musk, moss, cedarwood and spice.

Enough presence to soften the smokiness in the room, without taking away the thing that made it feel like Beechmont in the first place. taken in Beechmont Estate by @olfactorydept

Like creating an atmosphere, the design process for a shoot begins months in advance with research, references and refinement.

Every detail considered before the day comes together.

We rarely begin with fragrance.

We begin with the property.

What grows nearby? What materials have been used? What does the air smell like after rain? What happens when someone first walks through the door? What should they remember six months after leaving?

Sometimes there’s a particular memory the owner wants to preserve. Sometimes it’s a landscape. Sometimes we spend a while working out what the property absolutely shouldn’t smell like.

Only then do we begin developing the fragrance.

We’re now beginning conversations for a small number of February to April 2027 scent projects, for hotels, lodges and private estates.

If you’re opening, refurbishing, or reconsidering the atmosphere of an existing property, we’d love to hear about it. taken in Brisbane by @olfactorydept

Congratulations to our client @mountmulliganlodge who were named among Robb Report’s 50 Greatest Luxury Hotels on Earth in 2026.

Robb Report’s annual list is shaped by the insight of 25 distinguished luxury travel specialists, each asked to identify the properties that have genuinely set a benchmark for exceptional travel.

Inclusion places Mount Mulligan Lodge — alongside sister property Orpheus Island Lodge — among a highly selective global collection of hotels recognised not only for their extraordinary setting, but for the depth, distinction and enduring quality of the guest experience.

Set beneath the dramatic escarpment of Mount Mulligan in Far North Queensland, the lodge is a place deeply connected to its landscape. Our bespoke fragrance for the property was created to reflect that same sense of place, drawing on notes of hay, eucalyptus and wattle to bring the surrounding environment into the guest experience.

A remarkable recognition for a remarkable Australian property — and one we are incredibly proud to work alongside. taken in Mount Mulligan Lodge by @olfactorydept

Synthetic doesn’t mean bad. Generic does.

Some of the most interesting fragrances rely on synthetic materials. They can create texture, diffusion and even smells that simply don’t exist in nature.

What I find less interesting is walking into a hotel and immediately recognising somebody else’s perfume.

Santal 33. Baccarat Rouge. Another familiar fragrance recreated and pumped through a lobby because someone decided it smelled luxurious.

The best hotels don’t need to borrow somebody else’s identity.

The scent in the lobby, the amenities in the bathroom, even the fragrance of the soap should feel connected to the property itself.

After years of travelling, those are often the details I remember. Not because they were expensive or particularly obvious.

They just belonged there. taken in Brisbane by @olfactorydept

There are moments in a stay that ask very little of us.

A hot shower after the ocean.
Bare feet.
Salt still on the skin.
A few quiet minutes before the evening begins.

These are the moments fragrance can quietly elevate.

Not by overwhelming the space, but by becoming part of the ritual — something that deepens the feeling of where you are and how that moment is experience. by @olfactorydept
