A truly magnificent gentleman cat: Perry @yanksgal23 💚May he rest in the land of endless ham and library bathrooms🍖 📚 truly majestic.

Perry was one of the very first commissioned cat portraits I made back in 2015. I also had the pleasure of meeting him and his brother Monty not too many years later. Both were an honor 📚🍤🍤

Hope everyone enjoys their Caturday and this sea of black, rust, red, gold, gray, and cream in honor of #tortoiseshellcatappreciationday started last year by Ingrid of @theconsciouscat 🖤🧡💛🖤 just about every day people message me asking what breed of cat my Fig and Rye are because their cat looks just like mine. Tortoiseshell is a fur pattern, not a breed, which is the result of two dominant genes being expressed on the X chromosome - the gene for black/gray fur and the gene for red/orange/cream fur. Torties have one X with each which is why they are genetically almost always female. Male torties (and calicos which are genetically essentially the same) are so rare because they are genetically XXY and thus generally sterile and rare.

This fur pattern can occur on a bunch of different breeds of cat but it is very common amongst domestic shorthairs (or “mutt”) cats like my own cats. In some countries torties are considered lucky. In the US they are amongst the least adopted from shelters (after black cats, seniors and special needs). Personally I think tortitude is a myth and that any cat of any color or breed can be feisty, vocal, energetic, loving, affectionate or grumpy, antisocial, aggressive, anxious etc. 🖤🧡🖤 I think the concept of tortitude puts some people off of these beautiful and unique cats and so I celebrate this day in hopes that people will not overlook them or fear them before they get to know them. A good rule of thumb for humans and other animals. 🖤🧡🖤🧡🐢🐢 by @oliveandryecatart

Some days the hands don’t want to cooperate and some days the brain won’t and other days neither will. But for a few hours here and there, the stars align and I can get something done. And it isn’t as much as I wish it was. But it wasn’t nothing either. #comingbacktolife

This is a #wip of Tink and Retro of @thecatball fame 💙 by @oliveandryecatart

The first portrait I could bring myself to make this year was heartbreaking 🥺 Rest In Peace beautiful Chloe Bear @five_torties 🖤🧡🖤🧡 you are and will be missed so very much.

If nothing else this year, I got to draw - if too briefly - for just pleasure. I experimented and got a little weird. That was back in April which feels like a whole lifetime ago. I’m glad something beautiful could come out the darkness of 2020. I’m not resolving to do anything nor berating myself for not having done more. I survived. Let’s hope 2021 is brighter and kinder to us all ✨🖤

This is a mix of portraits, memorials, dtiys, prompts, and some concepts I just had to get out, all from 2020, mostly from after lockdown began. by @oliveandryecatart

I have wanted to draw Fig as her most flamboyant #SuperFig self for a while. And when her Polish parallel #adventurecat @kunakotka Super Kuna crossed our insta-path, I felt there needed to be a diptych to show off both of these very special beloved and adventurous babies in their element🧡💜🖤it was nice to draw for pleasure for a minute 💜🧡🖤 by @oliveandryecatart

Merry Catmas to all you cats and kittens 🧡🖤🎄🖤🧡 Hope you are all safe and warm and peaceful wherever you are 🧡🖤🎄🖤🧡 by @oliveandryecatart

A weird #topnine cross-section of a weird year. 2020 had some high creative peaks for me but it is ending in a valley of frustrations. I’m a few weeks away from meeting with a neurologist about my arms/wrists/hands (unless it is cancelled due to covid which is entirely possible!). I miss being filled with inspiration so intensely that I must draw it out. I want to return to that state so much. Along with being able to hug my friends, go to a restaurant for a meal or see a movie in a theater, travel, and not have to worry about putting anyone’s lives in jeopardy doing so.

Personal positives from this year:
- a new place to live that I love 🏠
- purged a lot of things that were weighing me down mentally and physically⚓️
- going on walks with Fig and learning to understand each other in a new way as well as deepening my relationship with @oliveandrye
- still have my day job and people I like to work with
- made some art I’m really proud of
- worked on my mental and physical health through self care, yoga/mobility exercises, meditation
- got into plants and haven’t killed anything yet🍃
- connected with a lot of new people whose (digital) company I enjoy.

Still - #fuck2020 - for all the things it has robbed myself and basically everyone else in the world of. I really hope we can turn a significant corner in the coming year on all levels. We all need something to look forward to.

The things that I think we should carry with us into 2021:

#bekind - everyone is carrying a burden no one else can see (on top of the burden of 2020 which we all are under)

#wearafuckingmask - 😷STILL needs to be said and 🧼wash 🙌your🧼damn🦠🖐hands🙌🧴

#allblacklivesmatter - because we can’t stop saying it until they all DO and are treated as such.

#catscatscats - obviously 😻

I hope everyone has as happy a holiday as is possible and keeps safe and well. Merry Catmas Eve! 🎄😻 by @oliveandryecatart

A little-big thing that made me say YAY 😭😵 @jvn just reposted this portrait I made of them last year at this time with their weather reporting cat Harry Larry to their stories 🌈 I can now die happy 🌪❄️⚡️🌞⛈☔️ THANK YOU JVN YOU MAGICAL HUMAN!!

REPOST
#tbt There is a 100% chance that
@jvn and #harrylarry are a
ray of fucking sunshine 🌞 This is a portrait I did back before all these covid shenanigans were a twinkle in anyone’s eye. I love that they shared a video of Harry Larry’s fun at home together making fun shit up to entertain themselves and their cats in a loving way 😭😭 just like so many of us simultaneously, separately. 😭😭🌈❄️🌞🌧☔️

A little #wip from when the drawing spirit entered my person last night rather late. I love #oxalistriangularis 💜🖤 and it pairs nicely with a black-purple Luna cat @effunia 💜🖤 I also attempted an opalescent background which I’m not sure was as successful😅

Lastly there is my Fig @oliveandrye from our Caturday adventure “hike”. She is the light of my life right now.

I am having trouble finding the words lately. Depression and anxiety are both jerks, dragging me despite every attempt to feel better. Everything is exhausting. We’re all in our own version of the weeds and I wish it was easier for everyone.

I miss being on IG, the version before they prioritized shopping over interaction with other people 😑 I’m not going to be able to reopen my shop for new commissions this year. Apologies to those who were hoping 😞 it isn’t an easy decision. Thank you for all the kind DMs. I’m doing my best to respond and also stay off my phone as much as possible 😅

Until again, be kind to each other. Wear a mask. Stay safe. 🖤💜
