Some of the circle and spiral calligraphy I did in 2022. Some in copperplate script, others in italic, gothicized italic and uncial. There were gilded elements, watercolour flowers and versal caps. These were all so much fun to explore. Looking forward to expanding these in the new year.

Dreams.

This is one of my pieces for the Symbiosis exhibition. The centrepiece is inspired by a vintage Peranakan tile*, where I’ve gilded a raised border surrounding the rose. A second gilded border surrounds the tile. The title of the poem by Langston Hughes is raised gilding on uncial script 8mm tall; fine sculpted gilded flower vines complete the border with the title and poet’s name. The poem is written on the outermost border in an italic variation of 3mm x-height, accented with drops of gilded flourish polished to a mirror shine.

Gilded Dragonfly on Pebble.

This is one of my favourite pieces from the Symbiosis Exhibition.

I had wanted to do something no one had done before, or at least not that I’ve seen. I knew I wanted it to be 3D and so the thought of gilding a dragonfly with its translucent wings lifting off from the body came to my mind. The wings are gilded on natural calfskin vellum with 23.5k gold.

I wanted the body of the dragonfly to be gilded on to an unusual surface. But it had to be a natural-occurring surface. So I walked into my garden and picked up this pebble. Pebbles are porous so I wondered if manuscript gesso would adhere well to it. I also wanted to work with coloured silver leaf, rather than gold, as dragonflies come in beautiful colours. Which presented a new set of challenges as silver leaf is far more brittle than gold and is tricky to adhere to moulded gesso. Happily my experiment worked. Thank you to everyone who messaged me and told me how much they love the piece.

Just a bit of where the material for this piece came from. The calfskin vellum I picked up from a holiday in England in 2018; the coloured silver leaf from a holiday in Japan in 2019; and the pebble from my garden in 2021. Pre-Covid holidays. 😄

My new @glass_studio_toos glass pen from the Singapore pen show. It’s a Taketori Hazy Moon in Celtic Blue with a drop nib. The drop nib is shaped like a tear drop and writes in varying widths depending on how you manipulate it. Great fun! The ink is @wearingeul_global Annabel Lee; one I keep going back to.

Serendipity is how I would describe coming across some of the glass pens I own. This was written in Killian script, with a glass pen. The writing was so difficult to photograph. The inks are actually blue and green, but it just looks a dark blue in most of my pics.

I learnt Killian script from @yukimi_annand a few years ago and it’s such a lovely script to experiment with.

An autumn haiku, written with my new @auneda glass pen. The pen is their new Marble Light Cobalt, which I think was first launched at the Singapore pen show last week. I love the colour, and my photos do not do it justice. In real life, against a white background, the colour is a gentle soothing blue. It becomes more intense against a black background. The nib, an FM, is a pleasure to write with, as always.

Writing with my @glass_studio_toos Taketori slim peacock with hana or flower nib. I wrote both the larger word and smaller subtext with the same nib. You can see a close-up of the nib in one of the photos. It’s a round floral shape and lays down a rounded shape, like what you see in the word Komorebi. This is a fun nib and is great for swatching inks as well.

Having fun playing with my new @glass_studio_toos Taketori Mirror of the Moon glass pen with the special Obi nib. The nib is very wide and perfect for large broad edge scripts. I fell in love with the nib when I first laid eyes on it in Kyoto a few months ago and am so pleased that I am the happy owner of one now.

The ink is @wearingeul_global Annabel Lee. Such a pretty blue. The pen rest is also by @glass_studio_toos
