That’s a wrap for the opening weekend of @friends.associates 100 Chairs exhibition. It was awesome seeing the breadth of creativity in response to the brief. Had a great time meeting those involved and left with lots of inspiration - already looking forward to next year’s event.

This is a rough first prototype of an idea I’ve been thinking about for a while. The aim was to create a side chair using clean lines and as few components as possible.

The seat features a slight 1 degree angle. While it might seem negligible, I think it contributes nicely to the forward leaning stance of the chair. It also has a functional use - shifting the user’s weight back slightly into the backrest, preventing the chair from tipping forward.

This silhouette is one I want to build a few further concepts from, experimenting with the placement, size and angle of the backrest as well as the overall proportions of the chair. By pushing the proportions past what would be considered typical for a side chair like this, I hope to bring out the playfulness and character within the design.
