Sketching is a fundamental skill in design. This is the reason why it is one of the very first skills students learn as part of any design degree. It’s not about drawing realistically or like an artist, that’s not how we utilise drawing in design (although there are some who are incredible at drawing!).

Sketching in design has many critical purposes that helps to build your expertise as an effective designer. First of all sketching is used as a communication tool, to effectively convey the look and feel of a product or design to an external audience. Second, sketching assist to convince clients of a design they can’t presently conceive. Third, sketching is intended to be a rapid process, so it captures your thoughts in a fast and efficient manner. Fourth, sketching various images can help to spur other ideas once analysed, it can also help improve the quality of your ideas as a result. Fifth, and perhaps most importantly, the process of sketching helps your brain make novel neural pathways and cognitive connections that generate a way of thinking unique to designers.

So, ID students, sketch as often and whenever you can! Grab a pen and paper and start doodling, practicing the skills you’ve been introduced to in your foundation units. It’s not about developing refined artistic and realism skills, it’s about practicing hand-eye coordination, muscle memory, and creating those critical neural pathways that makes you think like a design professional!

As the semester begins for our design students it’s a good time to remind them to continually practice the basics. Sketching, model-making, prototyping, CAD visualisation and technical detailing. On top of that you should always iterative, explore, research, and detail your designs as they develop and evolve over the course of the project.

As many would know this can’t be completed at the last minute - it’s impossible to do. It has to be started from week 1 - so as a first year students, or new to design - make sure you’re recording, sketching, taking notes, ideating and all the other good stuff from this week onwards! You’ll be thankful by the end of semester that you’ve started early! 👌🏼👍🏼

Thanks to @oliveryoungdesign for his amazing design development record (DDR) - perfectly captures a lot of what a desig DDR should be.

Showing off some more final year Industrial Design honours project work. It’s amazing to analyse some of the design development work to understand the level of details and refinement required through a product design project. It’s not just about aesthetic and form. It’s not just about technical detail or mechanical resolution. It’s not just about solving a problem. It’s a sophisticated combination of a variety of factors that make a design project great.

We’re also giving you a peek into the final presentation images from a variety of students. Don’t forget to check out QUT graduating student work on 23rd November when we launch the Design Festival exhibition website. More info to come soon so stay tuned!

A final submission for our team working with a modified boxing program to help reduce the impact of injuries for participants whilst making the sport fun and engaging. Specifically we worked closely to produce an integrated system that facilitated a modified boxing bag attachment and ankle based fitness monitor designed to improve fitness at a gradual level and assist with keeping the user engaged with the program.
