The Theatre Hat - The Feminine Performance

Through my project I aimed to portray the real life horrors modern women and women throughout history have faced to fit into a world where their value is tied to their feminity, youth and beauty. I explored the idea that feminity is ultimately an inherant performance that every woman is forced to maintain to prove her value in society, thus the Opera Theatre hat concept was born! A surreal and striking visual, that functions as an isolated view of a woman’s face on a vintage opera stage, the focus of the performance.
The hat I made out of primarily recycled materials, going through scrap bins and cardboard to bring it to life and features a functioning curtain mechanism allowing the curtains to be opened by pulling a tassel at the side of the hat.

Thank you to everyone who helped make this happen!

Agent Zo - Elżbieta Zawacka

Shoot 3/3 from my final graduate project at Central Saint Martins. Part of an analog photography triptych inspired by the lives of real Polish women in history.

Taken on 35mm & 120 film this self-portrait, reimagines Zawacka in an early 1900s blue suit (kindly loaned to us for the show by the incredible @thomasfarthinglondon ) , echoing the practical uniforms worn by wartime couriers. She is depicted carrying an oversized, bundle of parcels on her back, symbolising the immense responsibility placed upon her within Poland’s wartime resistance. The work highlights her unique position as the only woman to undertake this role, operating at the heart of the Polish struggle against occupation.

Elżbieta Zawacka, known by the codename “Zo,” was a Polish resistance fighter, courier, and intelligence operative during the Second World War. Elżbieta was one of the only women to serve as an emissary for the Polish Underground State and Home Army during World War II. She undertook dangerous missions, carrying intelligence, documents, and messages between the Polish resistance and other parts of occupied Europe. Zawacka is recognised as one of the most remarkable figures of the Polish resistance, completing more than 100 wartime border crossings as a courier.

Thank you so much to my lovely team who helped me make this happen and on a 32° day

My final graduate project outcome at @csm_news @csmgraphics

Forgotten Heroines: Challenging Cultural Erasure & Reclaiming Polish Identity Through Visual Storytelling.

Against the tendency for Poland’s international identity to be defined by tragedy, loss, and historical trauma, this project explores how visual storytelling can recover overlooked narratives and expand cultural memory. Through surrealist set design, analogue photography, and practical image-making, three women from Polish history are reimagined as contemporary folk heroes. Presented as a triptych within bespoke Wycinanki-inspired opening frames, each portrait reveals bilingual contextual text, encouraging audiences to uncover hidden histories through an act of discovery.

Featuring the remarkable stories of Elżbieta (Agent Zo) Zawacka, Emilia Plater and Danuta Siedzikówna (Inka)

Thank you to the massive list of people who helped make this happen with extra special thanks to:

Emilia Plater - “The Polish Joan of Arc”

My first shoot from my final graduate project at @csmgraphics @csm_news exploring the stories of iconic Polish women throughout history through surrealist photographs. A symbol of Polish nationalism Emilia Plater was a Polish aristocrat in the early 1800s who joined the uprising against Russian invasion and became a commander within the army.

The set was constructed with no budget and the botanical displays I made are made of mostly weeds I found in our back garden along with some sticks I spray painted red.

Inside the projects from CSM Shows 2026.

Forgotten Heroines: Challenging Cultural Erasure & Reclaiming Polish Identity Through Visual Storytelling by Olivia Rym @oliviarym explores how visual storytelling can recover overlooked histories and expand cultural memory.

The project focuses on three women from Polish history: Elżbieta Zawacka, Emilia Plater and Danuta Siedzikówna, reimagining their stories through analogue photography, surrealist set design and interactive Wycinanki-inspired frames.

Through this work, the project opens up conversations around Polish identity, feminist history, intergenerational memory and the hidden narratives that risk being lost over time.

Merrit double wide wool trousers designed and made by @levi_jeans__ @leviwebb.designs creative directed styled and shot by @oliviarym

Vintage cotton sailor hat co-designed by @oliviarym and @levi_jeans__ @leviwebb.designs

The trousers feature an extra high waistband with a triple buttoned extended tab closure. Crafted from a rich dark blue striped thick wool flannel that was donated scrap material, these pants were crafted with sustainability as a focus.

The silhouette of these trouser’s was heavily inspired by 70s women’s maxi skirts with a thick waistband and adapted into a tailored pair of men’s trousers. Inspiration was also taken from the flowy movable high waisted 1920s“oxford bags” trousers that rose to popularity amongst the Northern Soul dance movement in London in the 60s/70s.

The hat was inspired by “Dixie Cup” sailor hats from the 1890s. Made using a vintage cotton to give an aged appearance. Featuring long detachable under-chin straps that can be fashioned into a bow.
