Nothing epitomises the Golden Age of Hollywood more than #GraceKelly and #CaryGrant
Here at flirt level maximus in the Riviera, with double-entendre strewn chat and an insane firework display that takes the “sub” out of “Freudian sub-text” and grinds it gleefully into the Puritanical Hayes-era ground.
Yep, it’s #AlfredHitchcock’s #ToCatchAThief 1955, a delightful refreshment of a movie as effervescent as a fresh glass of champagne and as seductive as… Well, Cary Grant and Grace Kelly making sweet talk on a green velvet sofa.
This was the movie where the master took his foot off the thriller throttle, put all the darkness aside (but hung on to the sex and desire), eased back on the meticulously constructed, carefully machined set pieces…
And had fun.
Golly can you feel it.

Phenomenal sequence where investigative journalist #ElliottGould’s car is sabotaged so he’s no longer in control of a high speed Mustang relentlessly accelerating through busy city streets
The sequence works brilliantly on two levels: as a great French Connection style car chase where the driver is trying to escape himself and simultaneously as a primal Freudian nightmare that could be a terrible dream…
Which is why the footage was reused many times in American TV shows from the 70s and 80s like #TheFallGuy

#capricornone by #peterhyams made in 1978 is a post-Watergate thriller about a manned US space mission to Mars that is seamlessly staged for the cameras and broadcast live around the world as a true event…
But when the capsule disintegrates on re-entry the three astronauts— who’ve been spirited away to a hidden facility in the desert — realize they will never be allowed to stay alive so they attempt to escape, pursued across the American southwest by agents of the deep state in black helicopters…
Unknown to them, a crusading investigative journalist in San Francisco has caught wind of the conspiracy and on his way to help…
With its dark Carter-era vibes of a wounded nation in decline prepared to lie its way back to glory, deep state treachery and handsomely mounted big studio production values (there’s a great sequence with an out of control car in SF and a cool biplane helicopter chase at the end) this is an ur-late 70s Hollywood movie and all-round classic conspiracy thriller fondly remembered by its fans to this day.
It also boasts an ultra 70s A-list cast that includes #ElliottGould James Brolin (Josh’s dad) Karen Black #halholbrook Sam Waterston Telly Savalas and oh yes… OJ Simpson
It was a huge hit in its day and has left a mark on the culture since from the X-Files to moon landing conspiracies to the 90s paranoia of “black helicopters“ and Holbrook’s Machiavellian NASA chief remains one of the absolute classic deep state baddies of all time.

In 1947 #CarolReed made #OddManOut
The story of IRA leader Johnny McQueen on the run in Belfast after a robbery goes wrong
Brilliantly expressively played by the great #JamesMason, he’s wounded and delerious,and as the night goes on it becomes a gothic fantasia of madness
What started as gritty film noir ineluctably turns into surreal nightmare
It’s an extraordinary piece of work
Next ,Reed would make the dizzying emotional drama Fallen Idol then the extraordinary Third Man in what must stand as one of the great runs in British cinema
Here’s the centre point scene from Odd Man Out:
In which an increasingly unmoored Johnny finds himself sequestered by a egomaniacal artist into his studio and succumbs to full-blown hallucination
It’s one of the greatest, most committed deliveries of bible verse in cinema and unlike Pulp Fiction: this is actually in the bible

#TimCurry knew how to make an entrance.
I like to think this is how he’s greeting St Peter right now…
He was an icon of his time and a very British entertainer at the same time
Most of all…
He was his own kind of star.
The funny thing watching #TheRockyHorrorPictureShow again directed by #JimSharman in 1975 is…
How fresh it feels.
Immediate.
The mid-70s was a really shit time in Britain, all the fun and cool of the 60s had long since evaporated, punk was just a glimmer in the eye, the economy was in the tank , the IRA was blowing everything up and nothing worked.
It was a kind of dead zone of culture filled with glam rock and the odd Bowie album…
Then this…
Fresh, wild, transgressive, very very funny and full of couldntgiveafuck energy and camp style to boot.
It came in under the radar and stayed in the global consciousness ever since.
(Yes, that’s a very young #SusanSarandon there)
That’s class.
And it wouldn’t have been the same without the fabulous Tim Curry.

Most people remember the notorious #irreversible by #gasparnoe for it’s harrowing scenes with #vincentcassell wielding a fire extinguisher in a gay club and #monicabellucci’s graphic assault in the metro tunnel but I remember it equally for this…
The beautiful end strangely tinged with love and hope in a film so grim, dark and relentless…
Stunningly made too, using what were then state of the art tools and techniques that have since gone mainstream
In the world of dark cinema there’s a big difference between straight up nihilism and a kind of bleak existentialism. As disturbing as this film is… I never thought it was nihilistic. Never saw these vividly portrayed characters condemned to their fates.
