Four projects. Ten years. One very special school. 💙

Our relationship with Hilltop School in Mendham has grown over the years, and this summer we had the opportunity to return once again, this time to transform the ceiling of the Media Center.

Our first Hilltop mural dates back to 2016, when students helped create a mural celebrating the history of Mendham. We returned in 2018, then again in 2023 to transform the library hallway with books, birds, clouds, student handprints, and uplifting messages.

And now, in 2026, we’re looking up.

There’s something incredibly meaningful about being invited back to the same school again and again. You get to see how the artwork becomes part of the life of the school.

Thank you, Hilltop, for continuing to make room for art! by @olmstedmurals

If you’ve driven through Bernardsville, chances are you’ve seen this mural. 🚗🎨

But what you see from the road is only part of the story.
The Welcome to Bernardsville project was a two-year community-wide effort involving hundreds of local residents, students, businesses, nonprofits, and town leaders.

Together, we transformed both sides of the NJ Transit railway overpass on Mt. Airy Road into a colorful welcome to the borough.

The project involved public brainstorming sessions, collaboration with Bernardsville High School Advanced Art students, community painting days, studio work, and then of course, the installation process.

And because this is a major traffic corridor, the mural had to do something very specific: tell the story of Bernardsville clearly and beautifully in just a few seconds as people pass by.

Pictured are some of the behind the scenes of this project, and just a few of the people who helped bring this mural to fruition! by @olmstedmurals

Why do we involve so many people in painting a mural?
Because the finished artwork is only one part of the project.

When a person gets to paint a tiny section of a giant mural, that section becomes theirs. When hundreds of parents, children, and community members contribute, the finished piece becomes something the whole community can claim and have pride in.

Painting community murals lets us know how special and dedicated each community is. Just one reason I love this job!

Thank you to everyone who came out for our community painting days, and keep following along to see how this mural for Harrison New Jersey comes together! by @olmstedmurals

Greetings from Newton, New Jersey! 👋🎨
This 63’ x 14’ mural on Spring Street was a true community project, completed in 2023.

Titled “Greetings from Newton, New Jersey”, the mural brings together some of the places that make Newton recognizable.

But perhaps the most meaningful part of the project was the people.

More than 100 volunteers of all ages helped bring the mural to life. What began with a community vision became something the whole town could literally leave its mark on.

That’s what I love about public art: it doesn’t just decorate a town. It can help tell the story of the people who live there.

Not every mural is on view to the public - sometimes we also get to bring to life one person’s vision and make their home even more special with a unique mural. This piece installed in North Jersey at a private residence was a love letter to the homeowner’s family, including his grandmother who once had a farm with 28 horses! This client also requested a duck pond, beaver dam, and some white-tailed deer which we had a delight painting! by @olmstedmurals

Hillcrest Elementary in Somerset, NJ: This mural brings a little bit of the Eagle Warrior spirit to life, with Eddie the Eagle taking center stage alongside Hillcrest’s school, students, sports, gardens, and plenty of details that make this community unique.

From the first sketches to the finished wall, it was exciting to watch the vision come together. Now students have a colorful reminder of their school pride waiting for them every day. And of course a reminder that “At Hillcrest, we don’t just fly, we soar high!” by @olmstedmurals

The school year has begun, and students have finally gotten to see their new media center at Hilltop Elementary School in Mendham!
This summer, we transformed the ceiling of Hilltop Elementary School’s library and media center in Mendham, NJ into a colorful new piece of artwork designed specifically for the space.
There’s something especially fun about a mural on a ceiling. You don’t necessarily expect to find artwork there, and then suddenly you look up and the whole room feels different.
This project was a little different from our large collaborative school residencies, but it had the same goal at heart: to create a space that feels welcoming, imaginative, and special for the students who use it every day.
What do you think…should we be painting more ceilings? 😉 by @olmstedmurals

From science, music, art, history, literature, and athletics to the lakes, forests, and mountains that surround the school, this collaborative mural celebrates what makes Martin J. Ryerson Middle School such a special place to learn and grow.

Designed to greet students each day, the mural highlights both the school’s academic programs and the incredible natural landscape of Ringwood, creating a colorful snapshot of the community’s identity.

The town of Newton had a clear vision from day one, and the collaboration with local officials made the entire process feel like a true partnership.
A blank wall is now a spot people point to when giving directions, a backdrop for community events, a reflection of what makes Newton a great town.
Public art like this doesn’t happen without a town willing to invest in its own identity. Thank you, Newton, for that vision! by @olmstedmurals
