As part of the BookLab @beirutprintmakingstudio I had the chance to design and bind Studio Al-Andalus 1984 photobook.

Studio Al-Andalus was established in Sidon in 1970 by Nazih El-Benni and Salah El-Baba. Nazih had previously co-founded Studio Al-Ahram alongside his two brothers, Mohammad and Youssef El-Benni, before leaving the studio to establish Studio Al-Andalus.

The studio primarily specialized in portrait and commercial photography. Its work included passport photographs, personal portraits, and wedding photography, as well as photographing businesses and local shops and documenting different parts of the city of Sidon.

Over the years, the studio accumulated an extensive collection of 35mm and 6×9 negatives, along with VHS tapes and Super 8 films, comprising more than 50,000 items produced over five decades. An important aspect of the archive is its documentation of the changing urban landscape of Sidon, particularly the construction and urbanization projects that reshaped the city in the post–Civil War period, while also reflecting periods of conflict and political instability.

The studio was temporarily closed during the Israeli invasion and was later reopened despite having been damaged and looted.

The photographs collected in this book are a selection of studio portriats taken in 1984, two years into the Israeli occupation of Sidon. By then, Studio Al Andalos had reopened and resumed its regular operations. At the same time, Salah El-Baba was documenting the war outside the studio during the years of the Israeli invasion, from 1982 to 1985. by @omar.bsat
