Frank Gehry recently passed away.

I worked with him for six years on the Los Angeles River. He was a mentor and supporter for much longer.

This is part of a letter I recorded in honor of him—read aloud, with moments we shared.
The full tribute is on Substack.

Thank you, Frank.

27 poems on the art of waging peace.

Wholeness to Wholeness, written in collaboration with Zen Master Norma Wong. Check out her new podcast @thehorizonstory

We practice belonging not by fitting in, but by becoming together.

Excited to share my poems and grateful for this collaboration! 🙌🏾

What love looks like. Constantly changing. Growing. Keeping you on your toes. You change too. When you can savor the ups and downs. Looking back. It was all too fast. Thank you @zia.simone_ and @kenzieb_juniorclassprez for letting me be your dad. by @omarthanks

Run, don’t walk to the @legacymuseum in Montgomery. My wife stood at the base of the National Monument to Freedom and pointed up.

Pattillo.

Her father’s family name was engraved on the wall, taken from the 1870 census, among more than a hundred thousand other former slaves, now emancipated.

Our daughters stood beside her.

Not history as a lesson.

History as a wall my family could touch. A monument that touched us.

We went to Alabama because my wife wanted us to understand something together. We left with our hearts full in both directions: inspired and pained.

At the Equal Justice Initiative’s Legacy Sites, I kept thinking about what creates humanization or dehumanization.

Not just laws.

Not just courts.

Not just rights written down.

Freedom has to be practiced, remembered, protected, and rebuilt.

I wrote the full story on Substack: about the Montgomery bus boycott, jars of soil gathered from lynching sites, the domestic slave trade, Michelle Browder’s art inside a former slave pen and sculptures honoring the Mothers of Gynecology, and what my family carried home from Alabama.

Day 2 of 21 🌱

Community gardens teach us both sovereignty and interdependence.

Each gardener has their own relationship with the land. But we also share water, compost, pathways, decisions, and care.

That’s why leadership matters.

Our Shared Land, Shared Leadership campaign helps build tools for gardeners to share land and leadership well.

Every supporter helps unlock matching funds.

What’s the number one crop in the US? Not soy or corn. Grass. 40 million acres of lawns. Time to plant more food.

Thanks @greenthumbnyc and @theurbangardenproj for hosting such a great conference!

Cheers,

Belonging
is home.

Becoming
is freedom.

We often talk about belonging as finding the place where we are accepted.

And we talk about becoming as growth, change, or transformation.

But I’ve been wondering if they are less opposed than they seem.

Can you find home in letting go?
