Diamond Head Community Garden, talking story with Anna, who runs community gardening for the City of Honolulu and oversees 1,200 beds across 11 sites. Anna and I also both serve on the founding board member of the Urban Garden Project. At LA Community Garden Council we’re at 40+ gardens and 2,000+ members. Different island, different climate, same questions: who gets a bed, how you handle conflict, what happens when a garden outgrows its plan. Mahalo to Anna for the time and the tour. 🌱 #CommunityGardens #Honolulu #DiamondHead #UrbanAgriculture #LACommunityGardenCouncil UrbanGardenProject

Let’s get right into it. The reason we are here: The learnings. The truth. The tools. The roadmap. The core of The Urban Garden Project is The 9 Factors to Thrive. As folks who have worked with me know, I don’t believe in framing problems as problems. Problems are opportunities. Instead of calling this “The 9 Common Challenges Faced by Community Gardens,” as we’d planned to at the beginning of all of this - let’s embrace abundance with The 9 Factors to Thrive! Day 2 of 21 🌱 Community gardens teach us both sovereignty and interdependence. Each gardener has their own relationship with the land. But we also share water, compost, pathways, decisions, and care. That’s why leadership matters. Our Shared Land, Shared Leadership campaign helps build tools for gardeners to share land and leadership well. Every supporter helps unlock matching funds. Community gardens are so much more than places to grow food. They are places where neighbors meet, knowledge is shared, pollinators thrive, and communities become more resilient. Across cities, towns, and countries, community gardens are helping improve food access, strengthen social connections, support local ecosystems, and create a sense of belonging. At The Urban Garden Project, we're proud to celebrate the people, organizations, and gardens that make this movement possible every day. Together, we're growing something bigger than any one garden.
