This one has been in the works for a while, ever since I met @thejasonmoran at Moldejazz in 2014, in a quintet with @jonaskullhammar, @krestenosgood and Maria Laurette Friis.

When I started working with the @trondheimjazzorchestra, I really wanted to get to work with Jason again, not only because he is a genredefining pianist and one of our generations most original musical thinkers, but also because how he would make us play, and vice versa. Working with Jason and this amazing band has been the type of process you dream about, where you are constantly challenged and led to a new place - So much of what’s on this record happened IN THE STUDIO, not on a piece of paper somewhere else months before.

Also, having Jason meet these amazing musicians was something that was always going to be creative; some of scandinavias absolutely finest, and some of my favorite people:

Maciej Obara, polnischer Altsaxofonist, beschreibt seine Methode so: Themen dienen als Grundriss, von dem aus der Sound frei entfaltet wird – ein „Komponieren in Echtzeit“. Dafür braucht es Mitmusiker, die Offenheit und Sensibilität für das Mögliche mitbringen.

Mit Pianist Dominik Wania, Bassist Ole Morten Vågan und Schlagzeuger Gard Nilssen hat Obara ein Quartett gebildet, das feine Erzählstrukturen webt und intuitiv aufeinander eingeht. Ihre ECM-Alben zeigen den Formenreichtum und die Improvisationskunst der Band. Live wird nun der Trompeter Mathias Eick hinzukommen. Die Dialoge der Bläser und die neue Dynamik versprechen Spannung beim Konzert auf unserem Festival.

Going back to this incredible concert at the Polish Radio Concert Studio led by the amazing Ole Morten Vågan. ✨🎶
It’s been over a month, but it’s still hard to get over this unforgettable night. So much creativity, energy and incredible musicianship in one place — with Maciej Obara, Maniucha Bikont, Tomasz Dąbrowski, Marta Warelis, Marek Pospieszalski, Dominik Wania and many more.

Just back from an amazing three weeks as faculty at @banffcentre Jazz and Sonic Arts, working with a fantastic group of students.

So grateful to be reconnecting with some friends and making some new ones as well, teaching and performing alongside the absolutely stellar cast of @krisdavismusic, @melissaaldanasax , @sisselverapettersen, @cellisita, @savvyknows. @amirelsaffar_official, @lorenzobianchihoesch, @kdumbleton and Simon Barker, all under the guidance of @piotr_turkiewicz. Thanks!!!

The students: curious, brilliant, critical and generous. Thanks for every great encounter! Jazz is not dead, it is ALIVE (occasionaly wearing hiking boots and carrying bear spray.)

The nature; on such a ridiculously glorious level that it even makes a Norwegian SHUT UP about the old country and watch in awe. Oh Canada….!

⚡️NEW ADDITION on CD & Digital ⚡️ — “Daughter of War” is the debut album of the new four-piece band It Was Her Idea. @juliana_venter_vocalist and drummer @paalnilssenlove have already worked together in Paal’s PNL Circus project, and wanted to further this collaboration to a different direction, to explore other aspects that they had touched upon in Circus, and work with material that isn’t only composed by Paal. The first choice of bass player was @omvagan , who is an orchestra by himself. Ole Morten and Paal go way back as friends with a mutual respect for each other as artists, yet never really found the time to work properly together. Now’s the time. The fourth member is the Swedish (Norwegian-based) pianist @gronberg.oscar , who in the last year has clearly marked himself as one of the strongest piano players in the Scandinavian music scene. Already on paper you can tell this is going to be a different beast.

The four musicians started playing together in 2022, with all of them bringing in compositions, and through the juxtaposition of these four individual voices something new was born, something more than a one-off meeting. The music is a mix of jazz, contemporary music, noise, and conceptual pieces – a wide musical landscape that reflects the combined years of experience of the four of them. A strong feature of the band is the visceral vocal performance of Juliana, which gives the band a unique focus. The title track – the sadly all too relevantly titled “Daughter of War”, with lyrics written by @khaledafroagh – is a testament to Juliana’s strenght as a vocalist.

Knall ny trio som møttes på jam her forleden, og det var ingen tvil at de tre ville spille mer sammen. Klassisk trio dette her.

Hverken Signe Emmeluth, Ole Morten Vågan eller Paal Nilssen-Love burde trenge videre introduksjon ... Men okeida: Signe: Amoeba, Banshee, Maja Ratkje etc og etc. Paal: Large Unit, Circus, The Thing, utallige band med Brötzmann, Ken Vandermark, Frode Gjerstad etc etc. Ole Morten: Trondheim Jazzorkester, Jason Moran, Maria Kannegaard trio etc og etc.

Super happy to be writing some new music for the Polish Radio Jazz Orchestra!!

This version of the band is put together for this occasion especially, and made up of a blend of old and new friends……Big thanks to Karolina Juzwa, Roch Siĉinski and Anna Stanko for making it happen, and to the musicians for the trust!

Debut concert in Lodz on the 23rd of July! Radio in Warszawa and Tomasz Stanko festival in Bielsko Biava later this year. Psyched! Now all we need is the music.
