It's here!

On & For Production and Distribution is signing 'off', and as a parting gift we're pleased to announce the publication of a new book of essays, drawings, photographs, interviews and facts and figures, representing the past three years full of talks and screenings, Case Studies, public seminars, symposia, Work Sessions, projects, exhibitions, roundtables, workshops, and the support of sixteen artists' moving image projects in six countries and the digital realm. Edited by @rj_arthur with great care and insight 📕📗📙

As well as being a memory of the project, the book is intended as study resource, and is available to download digitally for free on our website in addition to the physical copies, beautifully designed by @bureau_wolewinski and printed by @graphiusgroup. @visionsdureel 2021 is in full swing and we’re enormously pleased to be able to support them in the 𝙄𝙣 𝘽𝙚𝙩𝙬𝙚𝙚𝙣 section of their industry programme. Across two days, and much like the On & For #WorkSessions, two artists’ film projects are matched with a tailor-made group of distributors, producers, festival directors and other agents, and given the space to explain their ideas and needs in a closed and generative environment. 🔮

The sessions are online and by invite only, but you can read about the event and both fantastic projects on our page via the link in bio.

In which curator María Palacios Cruz, artist Morgan Quaintance and artist and programmer @rheastorr respond to a set of five questions in writing, offering a breadth of perspectives and experiences in the field. “In a time when the industrial mode of production is in crisis, the relative ‘smallness’ advocated by [Maya] Deren decades ago would appear to be a strength. As she wrote, ‘Cameras do not make films; film-makers make films. Improve your films not by adding more equipment and personnel but by using what you have to its fullest capacity. The most important part of your equipment is yourself: your mobile body, your imaginative mind, and your freedom to use both. Make sure you do use them.’”

“Recently a colleague asked for permission to sleep in the next day and consequently show up late for work. After carefully considering her request, I realised I couldn’t find a good reason to not accommodate her appeal. After all, we all need sleep.”

“In an attempt to move away from this dystopian reality in which all conceivable forms of inactivity get tied into yielding tangible results, I’m wondering if it would be possible to reclaim sleep as a necessary tool to make space in our shared neoliberal sphere for something other than productivity. As such, it would be a way to undo capital's elimination of what John Crary describes as the "useless time of reflection and contemplation," with napping and resting providing a meaningful variant to non-activity.”
