【工作坊 Workshop | Re-viewing the Everyday: Cyanotype Lab 日常的異視界:藍曬實驗室】

Workshop Description 工作坊簡介

When everyday objects are stripped of their functional roles, light and shadow become their new language. Centred on the cyanotype process, this workshop invites you to place ordinary items, from keys, cutlery, and toothbrushes to translucent packaging, under UV light. Through ultraviolet catalysis and the rich oxidation of Prussian blue, we will break away from conventional perceptions of daily objects, reassembling mundane silhouettes into poetic, abstract compositions. No prior photography experience is required, simply bring your curiosity and everyday objects.

*You will make one bookmark and one A4 piece after completing the workshop.

[Exhibition] Rhapsody of August Riot (2026)

We always talk about how artworks are perceived by an audience in different contexts. For my degree show, I showcased the entire Examination series alongside text. Now, I’m displaying only two pieces from the series without text, just the titles. Without the context of self-examination, what do you see?

[Exhibition] ROAR: Rhapsody of August Riot (2026)

Honoured to be exhibiting two pieces from my Examination series at the Mall Galleries as part of @swanfall_art ’s 4th annual exhibition, ROAR - Rhapsody of August Riot. Thank you to the team for the invitation to be a part of this show.

The Examination series marks an expansion of my photography practice, extending beyond the image to incorporate object-based and document-oriented works that explore how identity is examined, constructed, and performed through institutional frameworks. Bringing these two physical works into conversation within the scale and history of the Mall Galleries has been a special experience. Huge thank you to the Swanfall team and all the incredible artists involved in making this showcase happen. If you’re in London, come by, take a look, and immerse yourself in the show!

[Publication] Examination: A Casebook (2026)

Created specifically for my MA degree show, “Examination: A Casebook” takes the form of a medical record. The cover mimics an actual medical folder, which I designed, printed, cut, and hand-bound to resemble the real thing. Upon opening the folder, a medical wristband bearing the artist’s name appears on the left. As the first element encountered by the reader, it marks the beginning of the book, the beginning of the series, and the beginning of a life.

The casebook presents the details and context of each work in the series. After the final page, a loose sheet introduces the fifth work exhibited in the show, functioning as an addition to the case file, something inserted after the initial diagnosis. A reproduction of Form D8, the divorce application document that served as a key reference throughout the project, is placed at the end of the folder.

Part artist’s book, part medical record, and part legal document, Examination: A Casebook invites viewers to navigate the spaces between diagnosis, identity, institutional language, and personal history. by @oncle_douglas

Degree Show Curatorial Plan (1)
🎨 The Captions & Colour Palette

Designed in the format of medical forms and set in a typewriter typeface. A consistent light blue and white palette echoes the atmosphere of sterile medical documentation.

Degree Show Curatorial Plan (2)
💡 Lighting & Glazing

I stripped away the lamp shades and reflectors to expose hard, cold-white fluorescent tubes. The resulting glare on the glossy glazing mirrors the windows in the photos, creating a barrier that evokes themes of medical containment and protection.

Degree Show Curatorial Plan (3)
📚 The Publication

Designed in the format of medical records, the publication invites viewers to engage with the artwork as an act of clinical examination. Flipping through the pages mirrors the process of reviewing a patient’s file, turning the audience into active participants in the investigation.

Degree Show Curatorial Plan (4)
🌡️ Thermostat & Temperature

Instead of hiding the wall’s thermostat, I placed the lightbox beside it so it visually integrated into the work. I also deliberately lowered the room’s temperature, which offers relief from the summer heatwave while evoking the cold, unsettling air of a clinic.

Degree Show Curatorial Plan (5)
📃 Spatial Bluepring

The floor plan and elevations map out the spatial choreography. By utilizing a minimal but effective blue stripe and subtle atmospheric design (controlled temperature, acoustic isolation, and clinical lighting) the architectural layout transforms an office room into an immersive, highly clinical setting. by @oncle_douglas

Examination #5 - The Examiner (2026)
Hand tracing on lab coat, worn by the artist
Variable dimensions

A white lab coat bearing a joint divorce application and final order in light blue is worn by the artist. The documents are carefully traced by hand, producing a delicate transcription of official records. The piece brings together legal documentation and the visual language of medical authority, while introducing a layer of mediation between source and surface.

In “To Be Honest”, the artist appears as the subject under examination. The role is reversed in “The Examiner”, as the artist assumes the position of examiner. The work adds a reflexive layer to the series, in which the act of examination turns inward and the artist becomes both the one who is assessed and the one who assesses.

This piece also reflects a change in stance. In “Irretrievably”, the self is passively exposed and seen through. In contrast, “The Examiner” presents an active gesture. The artist chooses to wear the past on the body and present it openly to others. Authority is no longer external but performed and self-directed.

The work collapses the distinction between patient and doctor, suggesting that self-examination is both imposed and enacted.

(Below)
Examination #4 - What To Wear (2026)
Wristbands on a metal rack
36 x 27 x 5cm

“The First Dress” and “What To Wear” examine identity as something inscribed, accumulated, and continually revised through institutional and social frameworks. Both works centre on the medical wristband, an object typically issued at birth to register and stabilise identity through fixed information such as name, gender, and place and date of birth.

In “The First Dress”, this initial act of registration is subtly disrupted. The birthplace is altered with slightly misaligned text, while the year of birth is partially obscured and overwritten. These minimal interventions adopt the visual language of official correction, suggesting an update while simultaneously enacting an alteration. What appears to be a stable record becomes a site where identity is rewritten, repositioned within broader political and historical contexts. The work foregrounds how identity, rather than being fixed, remains vulnerable to modification by authoritative systems that record, name, and define the individual from the outset.

Extending this premise, “What To Wear” presents a wall-mounted rack of wristbands bearing multiple names associated with the artist, including birth name, nickname, artist identity, online alias, and new names formed through migration. The singular authority of institutional identification is multiplied and destabilised here. Identities are no longer fixed, but interchangeable and situational, adopted in response to shifting contexts, relationships, and modes of address.

Examination #2 - Irretrievably (2026)
Archival pigment print on backlit film, lightbox
37 x 51 x 13cm

“Irretrievably” centres on a final order, a legally issued divorce document. The document is re-materialised through tracing paper, placed within a medical folder, and presented on an obsolete X-ray viewer before being rephotographed and produced as a backlit image.

Through this process, the document undergoes a shift in language and form. The legal artefact is repositioned as a diagnostic image. Legal and medical frameworks intersect, where a relationship is no longer described but appears to be examined, read, and interpreted.

The work draws on the legal statement that a marriage has “broken down irretrievably.” The term suggests a condition that is final and irreversible, where what has taken place cannot be undone. This sense of irretrievability extends beyond the relationship itself, applying also to the document that records it and the image that re-presents it. Each stage reinforces a state of permanence.

“Irretrievably” reflects on how systems define and conclude personal experience. What is declared final is not only documented, but structured into a form that resists revision, where alternative readings are held at a distance.

Examination #1 - To Be Honest (2026)
Archival pigment print on satin paper
150x100cm

“To Be Honest” is a staged photograph set within a hospital examination room. The undressed body is supported by medical braces, held in a suspended state where movement is restricted. This condition reflects experiences of injury, ageing, and persistent discomfort, where the body is no longer fully autonomous but subject to control. It also parallels a psychological state shaped by migration, in which familiar networks of support and relationships remain elsewhere. The self becomes out of step with its surroundings, neither fully grounded nor fully mobile.

Within the clinical environment, the body is placed under a system of observation. A medical wristband and an obsolete X-ray viewer situate the figure within a framework that identifies, records, and attempts to interpret it. The body is rendered as something to be read, yet what is made visible remains incomplete. While masculinity is presented in a state of exposure and vulnerability, intimacy and desire are held within conditions of controlled visibility.

The title “To Be Honest” suggests openness, yet within this constructed condition, honesty does not function as simple revelation. It emerges instead as a negotiated state shaped by the conditions of being seen.

[Exhibition] Examination @ RCA2026

I am showing a new series “Examination” at the degree show RCA2026. Examination is a series of works centred on the act of examining, constructed through medical and institutional frameworks. Developed during a period shaped by physical injury, immigration, and personal shifts in intimacy and relationships, the works engage with conditions of ageing, the body’s vulnerability, and the negotiation of identity over time. They explore how the individual is seen, recorded, and understood within structured systems, and how the self is renegotiated through this process.

[Wear My Image] Absinthe and Whisky (2026)

I spent one to two months creating this Jacquard piece. In the noisy and cramped Jacquard loom room, we used ten shades of grey threads to replace pixels with the interlacing of warp and weft, allowing the digital image to be reconstituted as a woven textile. I cannot express how beautifully it turned out. I still remember the conversation when I showed it to my professor @rutbleesluxemburg

👩‍🎨: This is very Yamamoto.
📸: Then I should wear it to the show in Paris.
👩‍🎨: Are you joking?
📸: No. An hour ago, I received confirmation of my show ticket. I will take the Eurostar right after this tutorial.

The next day, I was wearing my Jacquard piece on the streets of Paris. The last photo was taken at the front row of the Yohji Yamamoto FW26 show during Paris Men’s Fashion Week. by @oncle_douglas
