I am, because they were. I am, because they are. I am here not only because my ancestors survived the horrors of generations of genocide, displacement, and erasure, I am also here because they held onto to the beauty, love, and hope in their hearts. To carry and tend to the fires that have burned since time immemorial will only ever be a gift. May I be Indigenous in every lifetime, may my life honor their legacy of survival and resistance.

May I be proud for my papa, who carried so much fear and shame that he claimed another lineage until he walked on, yet he remembered who he was in his care for the butterflies, his love for marranitos, and his careful tending to the land

May I be proud for my great grandfather, a carrier of stones and untold stories. We are remembering and telling them now.

May I be proud for my great great grandmother, who anglicized her name for many years of her life, because the upheaval and violence in our homeland was strong.

May I be proud for my dad, who loved the land of his home so much, he shared that love with my sister and I in the brief time we had together. May we continue to heal the wounds that generations of state violence inflicted upon his ancestors and him alike.

May I be proud for the unnamed or forgotten peoples of my land and tribe, the missions could not erase us.

May I be proud for my sister and I, as we navigate this world together, putting so many pieces back in place on ourselves, and sending love back through time to heal the brokenness.

Indigenous existence is a miracle. Indigenous existence is a gift. Indigenous existence is resistance.

Happy Indigenous people’s day. May we see justice in our lifetime. by @oneflowerchild

MUST is proud to be an official stop for @cherokeeartmarket weekend, presented by Cherokee Nation Businesses! To mark the occasion, we’re presenting a gallery showcase featuring local artists of Indigenous descent, including paintings, jewelry, digital art, dance, weaving, and more. Two of the featured artists, @bekartoe and @kindra_swafford, are also featured artists at this year’s Cherokee Art Market!

We’ll also have exclusive new merch from @friendshipfriendworld featuring designs by select artists!

Art will be on display Thursday-Friday during regular hours 10-5pm, a special showing on Saturday from 5-10pm (following the Cherokee Art Market).

I have loved and dreamed of Earthships for over a decade. I completed the Academy and went back for my Felid Study 4 months later. I learned so much about how to build and other things of what not to do that go against my practice. The biggest challenge of my field study was being met with disdain anytime I advocated for things like access to clean water, working toilets, and safe working conditions. My roommate was mentally unwell and began harressing me at home and on the worksite, despite voicing my concerns of feeling unsafe she was allowed to stay and moved to nicer accommodations and I was left alone and isolated in a Simple Survival with broken doors and plastic windows. On our last day when I recorded our Q&A with Micheal Reynolds he defended calling tires indigenous as he drank an entire bottle of wine. When I asked what methods beyond the use of plastic and styrofoam were being explored I wasn’t given an answer.
What I thought was going to be an amazing learning experience left me with PTSD. I hope Earthship can change and grow into more than it’s become.

I’m still compiling and writing about my experience, but ask me anything.
