A little over a month ago we held the inaugural Regenerative Runway in Santa Barbara, CA with Visionary Sponsor @bellehahn1 💖

The runway showcased our new collection of handwoven bags made with recycled cotton designed by the 9 Wayuu weavers in our 2025 Innovation Team.

Each bag symbolizes Wayuu culture and life in the ranchería in La Guajira, Colombia. Stay tuned, we’ll be releasing these one-of-a-kind designs later in the year! 💫

The bags were modeled by changemakers like @alicelouisewaters @penny_livingston @jenniferkhowell, youth leaders like @kennedyfick and @ethan.maday & community leaders like MariaElena Lopez from @sunanthespace who are leading the change 🌎

Last week 31 Wayuu women graduated from our Yala’yalaa School for Women’s Empowerment and Entrepreneurship in La Guajira, Colombia 🎓

This year we offered three 10-month courses in Sustainable Community-Led Entrepreneurship, Positive Leadership & Communication, and Product Innovation & Design. For many of the graduates it was their first time taking a course or receiving a diploma.

“Yala’yalaa” is Wayuunaiki for brave, strong, empowered— qualities that have always lived in these women. With access to opportunity and support, they rise, and entire communities rise with them 🌟

The Escuela Yala’yalaa would not be possible without our Program Coordinator, @paulac_restrepo from @talentocolectivoorg. Paula teaches our workshops and accompanies the artisans every step of the way. She also organized the most meaningful graduation ceremony with intention setting, meditation, dance, thoughtful gifts, delicious food, and motivating speeches from the artisan leaders.

We’re grateful for your donations and purchases throughout the year that helped us get to this important moment. Please consider supporting our work today to ensure that we can continue providing these vital programs for Wayuu women. Donate now via our website onethreadcollective.org

Some moments captured at Tuesday’s marigold dyeing workshop at our store in Santa Barbara 💛

This time we learned from Samuel Bautista Lazo, a Zapotec artisan from Oaxaca who has been honing his plant dyeing and weaving skills since he was a small child.

This was the second plant dyeing workshop with natural dyeing artist @__felise and our friends at @sanawearco and we are totally enamored with this very grounding practice 🤗

Stay tuned— more workshops to come 💫 taken in Santa Barbara, California by @onethread.collective

When you spend some time getting to know your garments, it just might lead you to the flowers.

The Marigold Dye Workshop hosted by @onethread.collective and taught by @sam_dixza @__felise was so special. To learn the cultural roots and context of such a special flower was such a privilege - one we hope to continue to extend the opportunity to get to know.

Our underwear is white/cream because that is what the natural fibers speak as. But yesterday was a marriage of color. Guests got the opportunity to make the natural dye, learn the process, learn the lineage, and play with the color and the design.

AND BEHOLD- yellow SANA has been born. 🐝

It’s been such an honor to get to learn from Felise & Sam. We love these workshops because we believe in slow fashion, in connecting with the frequency of what we’ve got on, of what touches our hearts on our skin everyday.

So huge thank you the masterful guidance, and to Jackie for opening her space for such an intentional ceremony of natural color.

Email sanawearco@gmail.com to join our future workshops!

We wrote this piece a few years back, but history hasn’t changed...and neither have our calendars!

Can someone help us understand, why do 30 states in the USA still have a day named after a violent, incompetent tyrant who had poor navigational skills and *accidentally* stumbled upon the Americas thinking he found India, but never actually set foot in North America? 🤔 THAT guy gets a day?!

It must be related to the reason why up until 2020, there was a street in Santa Barbara literally named “Indio Muerto Street” which translates to dead Indian.

The reality is, the majority of Americans are still in denial about the real history of the Americas, and they don’t understand why decolonization is absolutely necessary to our survival.

The world desperately needs the wisdom that Indigenous Peoples have safeguarded throughout centuries of genocide and subjugation. Today and every day! taken in Santa Barbara, California by @onethread.collective

For years, the Wayuu women in our weaving collective have told us that safe drinking water is one of their most urgent needs.

After 6+ years of building trust-based relationships across more than a dozen remote Wayuu communities, we’re ready to take the next step of bringing water closer to home for families who need it most.

But we need your help to make it possible.

With a $250 donation you can provide a 1,000-liter water tank for a Wayuu family. We’ll handle the delivery and the logistics and you’ll get a beautiful handwoven water bottle as a thank you 🫶🏽

Donate at onethreadcollective.org or through the link in our bio.

Yesterday in Colombia we hosted another successful Water Wisdom Workshop with our partners at @talentocolectivoorg

This was another big step toward a goal we set at the beginning of the year of ensuring that every Wayuu woman in our weaving collective has access to safe drinking water 💧

Last March, our friends at @wateraccesstoall helped us begin this work by donating 150 Sawyer water filters to families across more than a dozen Wayuu communities 🙏🏽

Our next priority: to distribute 1000-liter water tanks to families with access to less than 20 liters of water per person per day.

For just $250 you can provide a family with a water tank💧as a thank you you’ll receive a handwoven water bottle holder from the women you supported 👉🏽

Listen to the remarkable story of how Jackie first began working with Wayuu communities at the UN Association of Santa Barbara Luncheon, where Jackie was awarded this years Peace Prize.

Jackie Gilbert originally went to La Guajira, Colombia with a Witness for Peace delegation led by Aviva Chomsky and @emmitabanks before returning as a Fulbright researcher to conduct fieldwork on the impacts of coal mining on Wayuu & Afro Colombian communities.

During her fieldwork a group of Wayuu women asked her to help them start a weaving project to bring fair trade work opportunities to women whose weaving talents was being exploited in the local marketplace.

A year later Jackie teamed up with Megan Battaglia and Paula Restrepo to start One Thread Collective. The project has grown to include more than a dozen remote Wayuu communities and counting!

Thank you to everyone who has supported us along this beautiful journey 🫶🏽 taken in Santa Barbara, California by @onethread.collective
