Can mining gold be sustainable?

In Madre de Dios, in the Peruvian Amazon, thousands of people depend on gold mining, while mercury pollution and deforestation are transforming the country’s most biodiverse tropical forest.

In La Pampa, one of the region’s main gold mining hubs, a formalized artisanal mining operation is trying to prove that another way of mining is possible. While facing roadblocks, violence, informal economies, and government neglect, it seeks to produce “clean gold” using mercury-free technologies.

Through the daily lives of workers, merchants, and small-scale miners, the film explores the tensions between survival, pollution, and legitimacy in one of the Amazon’s most complex extractive economies.

The world looks different when we hear from every corner of it.

See what One World Media has been up to over the past year, supporting journalists and filmmakers telling some of the world’s most underreported stories from the Global South.

Through our awards, fellowships and programmes, we’re working to strengthen diverse voices and help shape a more representative global media landscape.
Meet Monica Jha, recipient of this year’s Global Health Film Grant in partnership with the Pulitzer Center and the Financial Times. An award-winning independent journalist and filmmaker based in India, her project explores how communities are working to bridge the gap between science and spirituality to reshape how mental health is understood and treated in India.

Hear about the Climate Reporting Gap Fellowship, in partnership with Surge Africa Org, where six journalists are producing original stories on climate finance and the energy transition through inclusive, data-driven and community-centred reporting.

Meet Felipe Esparza Pérez, recipient of this year’s Amazon Film Grant in partnership with Mongabay. His film Clean Gold follows two miners and close friends working in one of the planet’s most threatened ecosystems, and explores the complexities of pursuing cleaner, more sustainable mining practices. by @oneworldm

Introducing One World Media's 2026 Journalist of the Year: Mohammed Amin

Mohammed is a Sudanese journalist specialising in geopolitics and human rights abuses in Sudan. He has worked tirelessly over the years to bear witness to the ongoing war, so that the world might pay attention.

He could not accept his award in person because the UK refused him a visa to attend tonight’s ceremony: an injustice that highlights the barriers Sudanese people face, not only in their own country, but in being seen and heard beyond it.

“As a Sudanese journalist and part of the Global South, I have a responsibility to bring the voice of the Sudanese people to the media from inside the country.” Mohammed told One World Media.
