The Stringer Awards 2026 finalists tell us about the people, communities, and groups in situations of vulnerability, and the risks they face, that have been central to their work.

Share their courageous reporting.

The communities on which I report face overlapping and often extreme risks: retaliation from armed groups, surveillance by state actors, displacement, and the daily precarity of living in conflict zones.

Slide 2: @_mmmazur__
People living in the border areas of the Chernihiv region face life-threatening risks every day—including shelling, missile strikes, and drone attacks. The elderly are often left without support or medical care; children are at risk of physical and psychological trauma; and internally displaced persons lose their homes, livelihoods, and sense of security.

Slide 3: @r.o.m.i.t.a
Sonu, one of the central characters in my mining investigation, is not allowed to speak to an outsider. An eight-year-old mine worker, he doesn’t go to school, sits in the sun eight hours a day chiseling cobblestones, manually. He has got so many scars that he hardly cares about “minor injuries.

Indigenous #knowledgetransmission takes place outside formal schools. Meet the community youth from @yec_sindrabong who are leading by example to revive traditional land practices in their remote villages of West Sikkim, Himalayas.

“Certain techniques from the past generations were very clever, adopting these practices can benefit us in creating new futures. We can be an example of adopting these authentic practices, something made with our own hands.”

@apmet_ruhp Phurtemba Bhutia, one of our social media reporters for this campaign and comes from the village of Chongri, which directly translates to ‘yak’ from the Nepali language. Chongri was traditionally a yak herders’ village where some herders still continue their practices of caring for the animals, making traditional dairy products and other objects connected to working with the land.

💌 If you are a youth led organization in #Sikkim or other remote mountain communities, we’d love to hear about the steps you are taking in your region to upkeep ancestral knowledge ownership and relevance in a time of hyperconnectivity.

“The traditional knowledge of our elders connected to our land and food has helped to maintain the balance of our ecosystems, which is important to pass on to our generation.”

@mon_mon_tamling Maniram is very passionate about learning traditional skills from his elders and so, the ‘Puraano gyaan, naya bhabishya / Old knowledge, new futures’ is an initiative very close to his heart.

We have been exploring the tensions between keeping ‘everything as it is’ and inevitable future trajectories formed through modernisation. In what ways can we incorporate traditional knowledge into today’s land practices as imagined by the youth of Sindrabung villages in #WestSikkim?

‘Puraano gyaan, naya bhabishya / Old knowledge, new futures’ is one such pilot for knowledge transfer from older to younger generations. The programme is designed by the youth for the youth in consultation with their elders, which includes skills-based knowledge about the land, that is at the risk of dying out.

Simultaneous workshops will be held in December at the @yec_sindrabong camp to experience and acquire the ways in which previous generations learned to work with their hands, animals, plants to improve collective living in their sacred landscapes.

🌿

Indigenous knowledge systems are holistic in their approaches which not only encompass hard skills, but lived experiences of the land, spirituality, human and more-than-human relations. This holistic knowledge can be a tool to enable future generations to cope with uncertainties, thrive under the demands of the modern world that tends to erode the sense of self and belonging. It can also strengthen ownership of traditional knowledge in a time where external stakeholders continue to tighten their grips over land-based decisions.

Can mining gold be sustainable?

In Madre de Dios, in the Peruvian Amazon, thousands of people depend on gold mining, while mercury pollution and deforestation are transforming the country’s most biodiverse tropical forest.

In La Pampa, one of the region’s main gold mining hubs, a formalized artisanal mining operation is trying to prove that another way of mining is possible. While facing roadblocks, violence, informal economies, and government neglect, it seeks to produce “clean gold” using mercury-free technologies.

Through the daily lives of workers, merchants, and small-scale miners, the film explores the tensions between survival, pollution, and legitimacy in one of the Amazon’s most complex extractive economies.

This video is supported by the Amazon Film Grant, as part of the @oneworldm.
