Across the Sea: Onishi Gallery with Homo Faber is on view through September 30.

Onihira Keiji’s lacquer box “Travel To The Moon” uses black lacquer to evoke the darkness of space, imagining a view of Earth from the surface of the Moon.

Globally recognized for his glass sculptures, Kano Tomohiro is a fifth-generation descendant of Kano Tomonobu, who led the influential Edo Kano School in the late nineteenth century. Kano’s 2025 painting “Tamahibiki 05” incorporates meteorite material into its composition.

Through their shared exploration of celestial themes, the two artists bring together materials and perspectives from both Earth and space.

🦋 Don’t miss Xiaohan Du today at 3:00pm at @onishigallery 🌊

“As an art historian who spends time looking at and thinking about art, over the years I’ve arrived at iterations of an answer to the same question: why do humans make art. The crux of the answer points to a trait that is shared by artists who become artists not by volition, but by necessity—that is, they have an almost existential need to interact with medium— “ ⏤ Xiaohan Du

Curator at Asia Society Museum, Xiaohan Du will give a talk on artworks in the current exhibition, Across the Sea: Onishi Gallery with Homo Faber.
Please join us at 16 East 79th Street, Ground Floor, NYC
