Life has a funny way of surprising us! Once upon a time, I dreamed about having a newspaper byline. Now, my business is the story. 😮

This week, I finally held a copy of the @chicagotribune Sunday story featuring @onleaveexperiences. Having grown up with this paper, seeing the story in print is surreal.

(The irony: I was traveling when the story hit newsstands. 🤦🏻‍♀️)

To those I’ve known since way back when: Thank you for being part of this unexpected journey. 🩷

And to our early clients and partners: Your trust in On Leave’s vision for redefining self-care means EVERYTHING. 🩷

For a long time, I thought the goal was to get back to a version of myself who was achieving, succeeding and being recognized for it at the highest level.

It took me years, and lots of help from a coach, to realize I was chasing a version of success that might not be what I wanted anymore.

I think we do this more often than we realize. We hold on to an earlier chapter of our lives because it felt good, because we were rewarded for it or because we knew who we were in it.

But what if what made you happy then isn’t what will make you most happy now?

I’ve been working with so many successful women recently, whether in 1:1 coaching or inside an On Leave Circle, who are courageously asking that same question.

When I've felt uncomfortable about the path I'm on, getting outside my normal context has been one of the most useful things I've done.

A different city, a new experience, a few hours when I’m not moving through the same places, with the same people, playing the same roles.

When we're inside our normal patterns, it can be really hard to see the roles we automatically step into, the rules we've made for ourselves, the things we keep saying yes to.

Sometimes a little distance is what helps us see them. 🩷 taken in Birmingham, Alabama by @onleaveexperiences

What if one of the “rules” shaping your life isn’t actually real?

I see versions of this all the time. We build our choices around rules we’ve never questioned: about our careers, money, what we’re allowed to want or how much space we’re allowed to take up.

It can be so powerful to ask: Is that actually true?

Kate from one of our 2025 On Leave Circles did just that! I thoroughly enjoyed catching up with her in NYC over brunch this summer. Swipe through for her story.

The On Leave Circle kicking off tonight is sold out, but I have a few 1:1 coaching spots open this fall. If you want to explore what might be possible when you stop treating the imaginary as fixed, send me a DM and we’ll start there. 💕 taken in New York City by @onleaveexperiences

September means the return of Circles season!

I moved into a new house a couple of months ago, and today, just in time to lead tonight’s Alumni Circle, my gallery wall is up behind me in my new home office.

Tonight, our alumni group is diving into the topic of regrets: not dwelling on the past, but asking what we’ve learned from our regrets, how they shape our choices today and what we might do now so we don’t have certain regrets in the future. I love these conversations because there’s so much we learn from each other.

The next new cohort of Circles kicks off on September 15 and is already sold out.

Want to be part of a future cohort? (Which will give you access to alumni conversations afterwards!) Check out the link in my bio and join the waitlist. 🩷 taken in Chicago, Illinois by @onleaveexperiences

You’ve been checking all the boxes. You had goals, and you achieved them: the degrees, the job, the family. Your life may be full with travel, adventure and friendships. And, yet there’s a voice in the back of your mind asking if there’s something more out there for you.

I know how you’re feeling. I’ve been there.

This journey started for me officially in 2020, but the nudges and that little voice in the back of my head started nearly 10 years earlier. I dismissed what I was feeling until it became unbearable.

I started by hiring a coach. I was able to have a real conversation with someone who wasn’t in my usual circle who had the tools I needed to work through this stage of my life.

At the same time, I created space in my life to solo travel, to briefly step outside my everyday surroundings and to change what I was able to see about myself.

There were many trips along my journey, and these trips are why On Leave Experiences exists today and why I got trained as a coach myself.

I started writing up the idea for On Leave Experiences on the flight home from a trip to Birmingham. This is the story of that trip.

If this resonates, my DMs are open.

Before I hired my coach years ago, I was high-performing but felt stuck.

Deciding to start working with my coach opened up a version of me that I always wanted to be… one who could handle a work crisis in the middle of a trip to Rhode Island without letting it swallow the whole weekend.

I still hear my coach’s questions in my head and often share them with you too: “What will happen if you do? What will happen if you don’t?” taken in Chicago, Illinois by @onleaveexperiences

Over the years, I got good at brushing off the feelings of discomfort. I’d get a great review, a big win, a high from doing work I was proud of, and I’d feel fine again for a while.

But the feelings always came back. I’d built exactly the life I was supposed to want, but some part of me kept insisting it wasn’t enough.

I needed to talk to someone who wasn’t my husband, my friends, my colleagues or my mentors. When I hired my coach, I didn’t know for sure I was going to leave corporate. I just knew I couldn’t let more time pass without seriously considering it.

If this strikes a chord, you might want to explore working with a coach too. Send me a DM. by @onleaveexperiences

We’re women who get the job done. Productivity was a big part of my identity during my corporate career too. We can become so focused on pushing through to get the job done that we don’t stop to process the feelings that pop up. We mask (so many women do) until those feelings become impossible to ignore.

If you’re feeling an urge for more or something different, let’s talk. I have a few 1:1 coaching spots available this fall for women weighing whether to keep doing what they’re doing or take a different path.

You can head to my bio to learn more or send me a DM. taken in Chicago, Illinois by @onleaveexperiences

That feeling isn’t a flaw. It’s recognition. Some part of you noticing that the life you built, the one you were “supposed” to want, isn’t filling exactly the thing you hoped it would fill. It’s more common than you might think. We just have to do something about it.

If you’ve felt that pull lately, On Leave Circles is a great space to start sorting through what that feeling is telling you.

Make the call. Send the DM. Sign up for the class. Buy the ticket. Both Pats and I took chances that opened up a new phase of our friendship and the possibility of something new for her. Taking a chance and creating space are the first steps, and so often the rest happens from there.

If you’re feeling the pull for something more, head to my bio to learn more about Circles and my coaching program. We have ✨ ONE SPOT left ✨ in our Fall Circles Cohort so if you’re looking for community, grab it before it’s gone.
