šŸ“ŽCasual Reader’s first Library Pick of November is Assata: An Autobiography by Assata ShakuršŸ“Žā€Ø
šŸ“†: Thursday 5th November
šŸ“Œ: On Road, Hackney Downs

we asked for your help selecting this months first book and Assata’s autobiography was the most voted!

there are some books you just know you have to read and this is one of them, an absolute vital classic. we can’t wait to read and discuss with you all. a reminder that On Road hosts are more intimate discussion, so everyone is somewhat in the hot seat and able to contribute fully to the discussion, if that sounds like your cup of tea, pull up.

about the book:

In 2013 Assata Shakur, founding member of the Black Liberation Army, former Black Panther and godmother of Tupac Shakur, became the first ever woman to make the FBI’s most wanted terrorist list.

Assata Shakur’s trial and conviction for the murder of a white state trooper in the spring of 1973 divided America. Her case quickly became emblematic of race relations and police brutality in the USA. While Assata’s detractors continue to label her a ruthless killer, her defenders cite her as the victim of a systematic, racist campaign to criminalize and suppress black nationalist organizations.

This intensely personal and political autobiography reveals a sensitive and gifted woman. With wit and candour Assata recounts the formative experiences that led her to embrace a life of activism. With pained awareness she portrays the strengths, weaknesses and eventual demise of black and white revolutionary groups at the hands of the state. A major contribution to the history of black liberation. by @onro.ad

Today, @RunnymedeTrust and @onro.ad launch ā€œThe Strength Between Usā€ - a new campaign exploring resistance, solidarity, and collective action across generations and communities.

For almost 60 years, the Runnymede Trust has spoken truth to power on race and racism, from broadening the curriculum to exposing the Windrush scandal. ā€œThe Strength Between Usā€ continues that work, celebrating what unites Britain’s multi-ethnic communities.

We’ll be beginning the campaign with a free weekend of events celebrating our shared history of resistance: stay tuned for more details…

Gen Z are usually described as digital natives, sober, sustainable, anti-brand and broke. But what if that conventional thinking was wrong?

Speak to young people, and it turns out that most of these claims are either untrue or blown far out of proportion. The parts that survive contact with the data rarely mean what brands think they mean.

@020sik digs into what we’re all getting wrong about Gen Z’s spending habits, and how brands can get ahead of the game.

Meet @eastlondonwarrior - a writer working at the intersection of academia and humour.

Her work spans the deeply personal and the incisive, from a moving piece on the death of Jason Arday, to sharp reflections on class identity, tracing what it means to still feel working class after her family’s move to a lower middle class neighbourhood.

Having worked in fashion for over 10 years, Adrien Leborgne was fed up with seeing brands ā€œusing the youthā€ - be that co-opting their energy, hosting activations that felt extractive, or merely sticking the term ā€˜youth’ over everything, without actually engaging with the people it implies. JustKids was his response: an attempt to address the lack of reciprocity he had seen elsewhere in the industry.

Guided by the motto ā€œliberate your inner childā€, the label provides creative opportunities for young people, while encouraging adults to reconnect with their younger selves.

We spoke to Adrien about the young community he has nurtured, what he has learnt from them, and why it’s so important for brands to talk with their consumers.
